jamesVault
Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for PCs that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world's biggest software maker is now testing an early version of the product with its own employees and that it will "soon" make a trial version available via its website. Microsoft has said that it will only include basic features for fighting viruses, which would likely make it comparable to the least-expensive products sold by Symantec and McAfee http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/pa...s-software.aspx

Mazhar
I am curious about it. I heard about it long time that Microsoft is going to have its own anti virus program but then it was out of news. I think it is going to be awesome because Microsoft knows more about its own OS so they would make the AV program so that no one can hack the OS or infect it. MightyJordan
What happened to it being completely free? It's not gonna sell much if they're gonna charge for it again. Oh, BTW: Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for PCs that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. Not setting high standards then! :p

crankenstein.exe
it will be available as a free download, so the EU shouldn't be able to say anything. i'm really looking forward to trying it out.
FloatingFatMan
I think I shall wait until it's out and there are some comparison results with other AV software. Early versions of One Care weren't exactly all they should have been, after all. ;)
MightyJordan
Early versions of One Care weren't exactly all they should have been, after all. ;) Yeah, that's true. The only good thing most reviewers said about it was that it was excellent at false positives (i.e. there weren't many of them compared with the rest). FloatingFatMan
A very pretty graph that's utterly meaningless without an explanation of what the numbers mean.
Guest xiphi
If it takes after OneCare as far as being quiet, good on resources, and easy to use then I'll definitely be giving this a go.
George P Global Moderator Posted June 11, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted June 11, 2009 I'm guessing it's to show success rate?
Darrian
It's been known for quite a while now that MS was working on a free replacement for OneCare. I would assume this is it, and I can't wait, since I would also assume that it's Windows 7-compatible (or else, why bother?) and OneCare doesn't work on 7. It should, this sounds more like OneCare v3 but totally free, since paying for it like before probably didn't get enough support. Still, I fully expect MS will have a more business oriented version of this with enterprise level controls etc that they will sell for a nice low price to their big business customers. But free basic AV for home users is all we need.
Argi
Wonder if they took the time to rewrite it completely since OneCare.
