This show that Microsoft did not only have really great detection rates but they had virtually no false positives at all, and that was the best result of all AV's tested. It is to *replace* Windows Live OneCare, and was originally code-named "Morro". It will compete not just with the lower-ended Symantec and McAfee AV products, but also such free stalwarts as Avast! Home (which I switched to since WLOC went moribund). McAfee was looking seriously about dragging Microsoft into court over WLOC (antitrust issues), despite the presence of Avast and McAfee's own bundling deals with Comcast and VZ. I figure alot of people will complain that Microsoft releasing a AV app, but hey ... their alot of free AVs out now. So, why can't Microsoft jump in too. Although i like that Microsoft are doing this, i do wonder what you mean by, "long overdue from Microsoft"? Note that other OS makers do not bundle or have their own free antivirus solution like Microsoft, so why should it be long over due for them and not others? I'm interested in seeing what they come up with for sure, but I'm 100% confident that it will be very basic and you have to pay a subscription for the "premium" features.
