Contact Lenses For Astigmatism & Long-term Computer Use?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I recently just got my first pair of contacts and am planning to switch to wearing these most of the time instead of glasses. I have 'soft lenses' - the Air Optix for Astigmatism specifically, which you replace every month.

Just wondering, of those of you who have contacts, how many of you have them for astigmatism? (in addition to treating nearsightedness/myopia for example) And how do your eyes feel after wearing them and sitting in front of the computer monitor for hours at a time?

Hoping for some feedback from you guys.. so far these contacts feel pretty great :D

Thanks!

I have astigmatism in one eye, and I'm very near-sighted. I'm pretty well blind without my glasses or contacts. I do wear contacts now and then, usually no more than a couple of times a month, and I find them to be very uncomfortable for long periods of time. I wear Acuvue Advance Astigmatism, which are supposed to be some of the most comfortable contacts around, but I can still hardly stand them.

As a graphic designer, I do spend long periods of time in front of the computer, and I do find that I strain slightly more with my contacts as opposed to my glasses. I also find that my eyes dry out after an hour or two when I wear contacts, to the point where my vision blurs if I don't blink every second or two--eyedrops don't help. I tend to get bad headaches after hours of use.

That being said, everyone is different. You might find that they nearly disappear on your eye, and if you're planning on wearing them more often than glasses, than you may very well get used to them.

Besides, I consider my glasses a fashion accessory. I look odd without them, now!

Funny you mention this because before the Air Optix I tried those exact types of contacts also, the Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism, and I had a very similar experience! My vision was kind of "out of focus" compared to the Air Optix, and also, my eyes sort of dried out and became irritated after using the computer for a couple of hours. Likewise I found that I had to blink more often after a while in order to maintain focus on objects. I find the Air Optix to be more comfortable. Maybe you should consider switching brands?
