Microsoft: "Gay" Almost Always Used as a Pejorative on Live

Recommended Posts

I wish they would implement a "Team Code" feature on LIVE that way if you wanted to play a game with your friends you could all enter a short Team Code so that you could only hear your teammates and no one else while you were playing And in the lobbies...

About the Gay issue, nothing new needs done, keep it the way it is, someone else had the right idea of "who cares who other people sleep with" and I agree, no one cares! I could care less if you had a mule at your crib that you thought was sexy, get over it...

1) gay people are used to people disrespecting them because of their sexual oreintation. they know that people are intolerant, so by actively putting it out there then they will be expecting it and will have no complaints

You say that, but then IMO no other minority group is as vocal and complains as much about discrimination as gays.

You'd better bet that they are going to be made fun of, and then go straight to MS to complain about "discrimination" on live. It just creates this big mess and headache for MS for no reason at all.

I agree with Audio Boxer commenting towards Perma. You are looking into it WAY TOO MUCH.

I also agree that stating your sexually orientation, your religion, etc causes HELL OF A LOT OF PROBLEMS.

Now personally from someone who has a gamertag that has his religion in it, I can tell you that besides people that go "kiddha sikh" (kiddha is hello in my language) No one else bothers me. Yes you have the random "wtf is sikh, is that just sick with a kh and blah blah blah" personally i dont care.

Other then that, the fact that its not DIRECTLY what most religioust would use (christian/buddhisht/islamist/sikh/hindu01 or etc) then your fine. Personally I HAVE witnessed peopole with names like that. Its like wtf?

You dont need to be called "Buddhist Rapper" or "Christianity|3ul|35". Ive seen the latter recently and it suprises me to how much trouble this person went thru to type "Christianity Rules". Jesus no one cares.

Also, if anyone has a problem with my gamertag / microsoft then I would change it. But no one does becuase im just A) showing im proud, B) probably the easiest alias ive come up with and have had it for 3-4 years now without problems, and the most important reason C) People can find me easier. Not just sikhs but anyone who knows about sikhs.

It makes me hapyp when I can find a fellow gamer sikh, or someone that knows of sikh, becuase then its like wow someone understands that we arent in the "middle east". But thats besides the point.

KEEP Sexually Orientation and any DIRECT RELIGION FLAME out of the gamertag.

Also funny thing is, as I read this 5 minutes ago, I showed my friends brother this. Hes gay and 26 and shes like wow some people and he just BUSTED out laughing. He said personally he believes that any gay association attacking this is just attracting attention. He would also personally never put his orientation in his gamertag because no one should know and its not a big deal. He said if someone asked him, yes it should be ok for him to say it. Which im pretty sure it is because they cant control voice. Or then the 8-15 yr olds would be gone.

But anyway, he's gay and found it funny, so coming from a gay guy, thats pretty bad that he believes his "own" association is attracting attention and not just us "straight" folk.

I'm glad that you don't care, but unfortunately many people do and make very inappropriate remarks as a result. That is one of the reasons why I don't think this is a very good idea. Even though they shouldn't have to put up with that sort of discrimination, it is a present reality, and this isn't going to help things at this point.

WHAT?? That's insane. The gay population has to listen to a tremendous amount of discriminatory remarks all the time, and they never call for people to lose their jobs, or attempt to destroy careers as some other minority groups (With more equal rights no less) commonly do. All they are trying to do is get equal rights, which they should have anyway. That statement is really out there...

This is one of the reasons I don't think it's a good idea, BUT your quotes around "discrimination" make it read like you don't believe that discrimination exists. It does, plain and simple. Is the debate appropriate for XBox Live? No. But it shouldn't be belittled...

This isn't RWI, so I'm not going to get into a debate about gay politics here. I'll just say it seems to me that I notice them complaining more than anyone else. But that's just IMO.

I put discrimination in quotes because I feel like we all know how the people on live are. Putting that you're gay in your name or profile on live and then complaining about being made fun of is like leaving your car unlocked in a rough neighborhood with the keys in the ignition and a sign saying free, and then complaining it was "stolen". I'm not saying it's right or anything, I'm just saying that's what's going to happen.

Not sure what RWI stands for, lol. I thought I knew all the acronyms by now, but I guess you learn something new every day. Though I couldn't find it online...

I would agree that it's the current thing getting media attention, but they're also the group still getting discriminated against. When that changes, you're likely to see the end of much of that. With that said, the general public doesn't need to be worried about what they say to them for fear of being sued, or having a large group picket your place of work or home, like with some other things... It's very different. It's accepted for the most part unfortunately.

I agree that this does not need to be in XBox Live. I've stated that a number of times. I don't think it's the appropriate forum for something like that. I'm not really clear on why someone would want to put information like that on XBox Live either.

RWI = Real World Issues. It's the section of Neowin where these kinds of political discussions go on. I was just trying to say we should keep that kind of discussion to there as these threads get de-railed by fanboysim enough that we don't need to add politics into the mix as well  .

Ah, that's a new one for me. lol

Not trying to derail the discussion, but your comment needed a response.

My tag was going to be DrunkScottishBastard until I realised people might tell me I have a drinking problem.

So yeah, no point in highlighting irrelevant things to gaming.

Drunk and ****** are inferred as soon as you mention that you're Scottish.
