Microsoft, who considers Linux a great threat, and once called the GPL a "cancer". Opinions on this one are flying all around us, but what does Linus Torvalds, Linux' benevolent dictator, think about all this? I'm a big believer in "technology over politics". I don't care who it comes from, as long as there are solid reasons for the code, and as long as we don't have to worry about licensing etc issues. I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same time, I think the Microsoft hatred is a disease. I believe in open development, and that very much involves not just making the source open, but also not shutting other people and companies out. There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major reason why I don't call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for whom it's about exclusion and hatred." It was'nt my fault, not much was known about the disease in those days! This is quite common around the Web, specially in forums, were some types of people go around spreading FUD and instigating hate and intolerance against what they see as the "opponent faction". When the companies themselves sometimes do similar things with their aggressive marketing campaigns (sometimes with the intention of spreading nothing more than FUD too), it will sure bring some meaning to the life of the trolls. Then again, Jobs just happen to be a CEO for a very large company that manages software and hardware development. Microsoft has done a lot of not so nice things in the past, though, and they have given many people good reasons to dislike them. Many of them use other Oses. What Microsoft does as a company and what kind of products they release are two different things. I think it is more about a reaction against the past illegal and unethical actions of Microsoft, and applying it to all their actions/products from then on. I disagree with Microsoft's past actions (and some of their saber rattling to coerce vendors into Linux Insurance), but those actions are separate from their products. And, indeed, separate from their other actions (such as submitting kernel code under the GPL). Subject Delta Posted July 25, 2009 Share Posted July 25, 2009 Its at least nice to see that someone from the world associated with Linux has had the class to come out with this statement, if more people from the Linux world focused more on making Linux great, and less on making inane blog posts about how evil Microsoft are, Linux could really take off. Ultimately, Linux like Windows is just a tool people use in their daily lives. If FOSS fans want to send Microsoft a message, they should send it by not using Windows, not by bleating on about how Microsoft are evil, and how all Windows users are brainless morons that have been entrapped by Microsoft. Props to Linus, seems like a reasonable and level headed guy.
