WILLIAMSBURG, VA, July 25 (UPI) -- Busch Gardens Williamsburg said Saturday the Virginia theme park's beloved Big Bad Wolf rollercoaster will close this year.

Park general manager John Reilly said in a statement that after 25 years of operation, the Big Bad Wolf will scare and entertain riders of all ages for the last time on Sept. 7, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

"We realize the Big Bad Wolf is a guest favorite, "Reilly said. "We're making the announcement now so coaster fans can ride one last time before it closes after Labor Day."

Busch Gardens said in the statement that 29 million riders have boarded the suspended roller coaster since it became the first of its kind in the world in 1984.

"While it remains a safe attraction, it has simply reached the end of its service life," Larry Giles, vice president of engineering and design at the James City County theme park, said.

The Virginian-Pilot said no announcement is currently planned for the future replacement of the Big Bad Wolf.
