Gio Takahashi Posted August 6, 2009 Share Posted August 6, 2009 I don't know if some of you guys have noticed this but there are actually (2) distinct places to download the Windows 7 RTM from on both MSDn and Technet.from the regular download link (from Microsoft) and from the top downloads section (From Akaimai global CDN). The Akaimai way should be faster for most people. If you are getting low speeds you should really try the Akamai side. Much faster. 50-200KB from MS since the load has kicked in vs 2MBps from akamai. Can someone be more clear with this? protocol7 Posted August 6, 2009 Share Posted August 6, 2009 Well for all those wondering I downloaded the x64 Ultimate ISO and installed it on a fresh disk. The license agreement that came up said Windows 7 Ultimate and there was nowhere to change versions during the initial install. After the install was complete and during 1st boot it asked for a key I tried putting in a Home Premium key and it said that it was the wrong key for the SKU installed. Put in an Ultimate key and no problem. So there ya go.. that was my experience anyway. Thanks for confirming that. I figured as much. Will just wait for a proper universal ISO. The build number for the technet download is (gasp) the same build number that went gold last month. Because they are afraid of getting smacked in the face when it turns out that Microsoft ninja'd them and released a different build number and would screw them out of updates and whatnot. too bad. I was hoping for that. pupdawg21 Posted August 6, 2009 Share Posted August 6, 2009 The Akamai one is so much faster becaues it's riding on top of Akamai's global CDN instead of going just back to where ever Microsoft is hosting the content. Also, it tries to pick a location that is physically closest to you greatly distributing the traffic and generally better experience when traffic is extremely heavy. I was hoping for that. Release a different build number than was already announced? Why would that make sense? OEM's got RTM the day it was announced, AFAIK. I'm sure they would only need to change a couple of files and leave the version number the same before intentionally leaking to wz0r. That being said, wz0r had to get it from somewhere, and it would be funny if they intentionally leaked a blacklisted version to that and other sites. Not like it would matter though, because it would only be a matter of time before someone figured it out and got the legit, illegal copy. Look at how fast WOW patches get downloaded. Microsoft has many more customers than WOW has players.... Bittorrent I really don't think is a viable option for them to distribute their software. I really don't think any company would use Bittorrent in it's current form to distribute major releases of software. At least I haven't seen one do it yet outside of the Open Source community. But the problem with BitTorrent is the possibility that nobody will seed or upload, just download. Maybe they should develop some kind of P2P distribution service to use for that, like BitTorrent. Who knows if it is ever going to happen :) . It's more than likely that hte person will burn to the DVD and immediately start the installation, thus not being able to seed.
