Windows 7 (Home Basic) Standard Color Scheme

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I installed Windows 7 Home Basic on my Laptop and my Desktop computers.

I chose "Windows 7 Standard" on both.

While on the Laptop I got the deep semi transparent colors on the Desktop I got the Basic Color Scheme (Basic and Standard give the same results).

How can I make it work just like in the Laptop?

Thanks.

Are you sure you got the right graphics card drivers installed? This is mostly the issue; depending on your manufacturer you might want to visit http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us (for NVIDIA-based cards) or http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML (for ATI-based cards). If it's an NVIDIA card, you can also use an IE extension that automatically finds the right driver for you.

On the other hand though, if it's an old card, it might just not be able to support Aero transparency at all.

OP: Please can you give us some screenshots showing us what you're referring to?

As far as I was aware Basic allowed for the Aero basic theme...no glass effect. The theme just looks transparent without actually being so.

I think he's referring to the Aero-Without-Transparency that comes with Home Basic vs. the non-aero non-accelerated Basic theme.

I'm also wondering why he would have Windows 7 Home Basic, since that product is really only for emerging markets and won't be sold at retail I believe

Hello.

Thanks for the help.

Here are Screenshots (In both computers Home Basic is installed and Standard Windows 7 Scheme is chosen):

As you can see (The Windows Bar, Task Bar, Colors), it's not the same Theme. Moreover, There's no transparency in the Desktop computer.

The laptop has much weaker and older Video card (Xpress Radeon 1100 Vs. Radeon HD3650). Both have the latest Windows Update Driver.

I like my OS lean and snappy.

In Vista days, Home Basic felt faster than XP. So it does in Windows 7.

What does the Home Premiums add?

Used the official MSDN disc (just made it all SKU).

It's funny, I used the same disc to install 3 computers. On 2 of them Standard gave the Laptop result, on the third it gave the Desktop result (As shown in the pictures above).

How can I transfer the Theme from one computer to another?

Thanks.

If you give me the Windows 7 MSSTYLES file I can try unlocking transparency for you. Should be the same as it in Vista Home Basic.

However, I have no clue as to why it automatically unlocked transparency for you on the laptop.

Where can I find it?

What else can be unlocked?

Thanks.

Transparency in home basic??? Wow!

+1

vista home basic doesn't allow this? i think that screenie is bs. search deviant art, there is some visual styles on there for home basic users.

ummm... i don't think that can be done man. i tried years ago with vista home basic and it is impossible. if you want aero or transparency go with another higher version.

yeah, it can the people who make themes found out how to do it. but I seriously doubt it just happens by accident like it seems to have in this case. anyway, talking about doing it is against the rules of the forum. unfortunately moderation of the thread is none existent atm...

Those are trials till I'll be able to buy it on the official release date.

I saw at MSFN a way, legitimate by Microsoft, to extend the trial for 120 days.

I guess something went wrong with the other installations.

Never mind.

About unlocking some Color Themes, I had no idea it's not allowed by forum rules.

I'd be surprised if Basic performed much faster than Premium - the stuff missing wouldn't be running most of the time.

Anyway, you can find a comparison of the editions on http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_skus_compare.asp

At a glance, you'd be missing Aero Glass, Aero Peek, Shake, Background, Windows Flip 3D, the premium games, Snipping Tool, Sticky Notes, Windows Journal, Windows Media Center, Windows DVD Maker, the ability to create a HomeGroup, and a couple more slightly more obscure features.

If you don't need them, fair, but beware.
