mounty
Just setting up a new XFX GeForce 9800GT when I noticed that it doesn't seem to have any additional 6 pin PCI-e power connector! Do some of the 9800GT's not require one? As there is no mention of what to do in the instruction manual, and I don't want to fry anything through lack of power to the video card Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/825626-geforce-9800gt-is-missing-the-6-pin-pci-e-connector/ Share on other sites
+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted September 20, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted September 20, 2009 You probably bought a low powered 'Green' one :p Just make sure you have an adequate PSU and all will be well. Some 9800GT cards don't need the 6pin connector :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/825626-geforce-9800gt-is-missing-the-6-pin-pci-e-connector/#findComment-591603486 Share on other sites
mounty
rightio then, I have a 650W PSU in the system so hopefully that will cover it cheers! +Mystic MVC Posted September 20, 2009 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2009 Definitely more than enough to handle it, especially if it is a "green" model. fix-this!
i know mine took a 6 pin connector. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/825626-geforce-9800gt-is-missing-the-6-pin-pci-e-connector/#findComment-591603656 Share on other sites
mounty
Well the 9800GT is up and running right now with no 6 pin connector attached, seems to be working ok The only real problem I had was removing the X1950 Pro from the mobo - there is a little black tab attached to the PCI-e slot that hooks into the graphics card, but it was completely obscured by the Radeon HS. A real head scratcher for a good 10 minutes :o Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/825626-geforce-9800gt-is-missing-the-6-pin-pci-e-connector/#findComment-591603762 Share on other sites

A real head scratcher for a good 10 minutes :o Yeah, that was a stupid design flaw that still bloody exists. I have a screw holding the cards in AND a clip that secures the card in place, why the hell do I need another that you can't access? I was going to suggest you check the 12v rails on your PSU and see what they are, for this set up, the higher the better. I'm not sure how these 'green' cards perform, or if they under perform :/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/825626-geforce-9800gt-is-missing-the-6-pin-pci-e-connector/#findComment-591603774 Share on other sites
a1ien
Yeah, your green card is underclocked revlative to other 9800GTs to save power. If you want try overclocking to normal specs to see if its still stable. mounty
hmm 2 good questions there. Does anyone recommend a utility for checking the voltages on an Asus mobo? I know there's the official 'Asus PC Probe' app, but I really hate the flashy (and buggy) interface. Trying to find some info on the 'green' 9800GT clockspeeds but there's not a lot so far, which is annoying as I didn't buy it as a 'green' version, I bought it as a regular 9800GT! I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is probably going to amount to a few FPS here or there. i_was_here
Have you tried looking up your video card model? Darrian
I'm unclear here. Is there no connector for it on the card, or no molex adapter cable? A friend of mine bought a (XFX) 9800 GTX recently, and it came with no adapter, as it very clearly stated in the manual that the adapter cable was intentionally not included and you were supposed to use a 6-pin connector directly from the PSU. His PSU didn't have any, of course, so I gave him an extra adapter I had laying around and it's working fine. If there is a port on the video card to plug it in then you probably need to do so. Also, did you RTFM? It probably explains whether you need to connect additional power or not, though obviously if there's no place to plug it in then you can't. mounty
Aye like I said there was no info in the instruction manual, and there is no 6 pin molex anywhere on this particular card (it's an 'eco' GT) Mystic said: I wouldn't worry too much about it. WatchTheSoup
That's really weird. Because XFX does not offer any green edition 9800GT. You sure you got the right card? Did you get the one with HDMI on it? Post the model if you can ... Argote
Run GPU-Z to see your video card clocks. Post your result here.
