Rip Xbox 360

Ok here is the story: Halo 3 ODST was installing to the 360, I thought I could smell burning but couldn?t work out where it was coming from, after looking around the room I notice a bit of smoke coming out the top of the heatsink on the 360 so i turned it off. Where the smoke was coming from:b>

After examining the heatsink It didn?t feel hot so i was a bit puzzled how smoke could be coming out of it or where it could have come from. So I got a surge protector, plugged the 360 in to that and powered it back on, after a few seconds smoke starts coming out of the heat sink again, there?s an electrical flash and a quiet pop... the next thing i know the 360 has the infamous 3 red rings.

It now appears a little chip has literally burnt off the motherboard as seen in the pic below.

I?m guessing that?s pretty much the end of my launch console, its never had so much as a disc read error never mind an rrod before now.

I had just done the jtag hack on the console the other week too and was looking forward to seeing what homebrew on the 360 would bring. Although the main reason for doing the hack right now was to switch the consoles region to play games that will most likely never be released in Europe... Raiden Fighter Aces, Raiden 4, Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou and so on.

I guess it has a good run for its money, almost 3 years and 10 months without an RROD on a launch console must be a pretty good record. (it went back to Microsoft so it could get the new cooling system when it was still in warranty)

That's not a launch console. The GPU heatsink of the left with the heatpipe was not introduced on repaired consoles from mid 2007.

Chances are if the MFG date is 2005 then it was repaired once before already unless you brought it from someone previously.

He said he sent it into MS for better cooling added.

Sorry to hear that it broke but at least you'll be able to get one of the new cooler/quiter models (Y)

Yup! at the end of last year when the warranty on the launch console expired I got an arcade and sold all the extras that came with it, so the total cost of the arcade was about ?80 with a new 3 year warranty and 5 arcade games as a nice extra. That?s practically silent so I still have a console to u:) :)

Just a shame as my launch console had the right motherboard to do the jtag hack and hadn?t been updated to patch the exploit. Im pretty big on homebrew / console hacking and could have finally imported Raiden 4 and a few other games im after.

Another one bites the dust. I ran through 3 360's myself.

i traded all my 360 games. got a nice amount of store-credit being they got a +$10 every 3 game turn-in promo going at gamestop.

managed to get batman:aa, reserve mw:2 and waiting for uncharted2 for my ps3 (launch console). :)

I may open it and temp fix so it'll work long enough to get by trade-in at store as well. hehe

To be fair, you did mess with it and got linux on it etc, who's to say it would still be working if you didn't do any mods to it?

Still almost 4 years, you can't complain. I know people who've already sent back their PS3s in less time to fix sony's inability to get optical drives to work right on their consoles. Go figure.

True maybe the jtag hack did have something to do with it, It had crossed my mind but most likely something I?ll never know either way. Then again I would have thought the 360 would have died as soon as I did the hack if it wasn?t happy with it... the only thing extra been used when the 360 is powered on are 3x 330ohm resistors. Most of the wires you see there are simply connected to an adaptor that goes in the PC?s printer port to flash the 360?s nand, after they can be removed and do absolutely nothing when not connected to a PC.

It?s unlikely Raiden 4 will be released in the UK, Raiden Fighter Aces never was and both games are region locked! I do hold out hope though as I?ve really got in to Raiden 3 on :)e PC! :)

yep. theres a sticker that breaks when its opened.

here, i happen to have one available for viewing :D

photoij.jpg

Yours doesn't look broken though.. it's still intact (meaning the sticker itself didn't break in half)

Tablet User I'm sorry this happened to you, My 360 almost had the same fate but miraculously kept working when I had mine sitting verticle. (I have unusual circumstances compared to other cases who had RROD). If mine does break I actually will buy another 360 because it's such an awesome machine.

Those don't tear in half. that's those new stickers MS use on everything, Where the silver stuff on the back separates from the tape. they're harder to mess with if the guy who first put it on did it right.

Also, yeah this isn't the actual RROD of fame, there wouldn't be smoke and a lightshow then. this is something that got messed up, possibly due to an error in your modding.causing the SMD component to gradually fail untill it went poof.

I?m not moaning about it, the track record 360?s have especially launch consoles I expected it to fail at some point, hence the reason I got a cheap arcade when the 3 year warranty expired on this console.

That allowed me to have fun modding this one and not leave myself without a 360 if it ever did break, Of course it?s a shame it broke but I expected it to at some point.

I just thought it was worth posting about as most of my mates who got a launch console were lucky to have one that lasted more than 6 months.
