Relaunch of Neowin.net Friday Jan 15th 2010

Recommended Posts

As you may have seen here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=864082 we are planning to relaunch Neowin this weekend. Daves sig kinda gives it away ;)

Aside from a few things left to do with the forums, we are virtually complete.

A few details:

  • We are upgrading from Invision Power Board 2.x.x to 3.0.5 which includes:
    • Invision Power Blogs 2.1 (RC2) (so long as there is no final release before Friday).
    • Completely new theme called Atlas.
    • New mobile version (forum and news)

[*]All previous themes you are used to on the forums will be scrapped, but will be compensated for new colors of Atlas (Blue, Midnight, Green, Reddish, Brown, Black).

[*]Full page spy and mini spy (now known as latest forum activity)

[*]Full replacement of our content management system (now Neowin Management System) to be replaced with Ignition, built from custom code by DaveLegg on Synapse, this handles our news.

News posts have already been converted to work fully on the new news system, it is a major upgrade and if you like Neowin now, you'll love it on the new system.

The forum however is a bit different. We have around 10 Million posts to convert from 2.x.x to be able to work with IPB 3.x. A test has already taken place and I can say that it takes just under 2 days to convert! Dave isn't on now but I'm planning on asking him if we can append the rest of the post data on Friday rather than having to run it completely again.

During the downtime IRC will be functional and we'll have a placeholder page with details on the upgrade, a video walk-through of the new features and we'll do out best to answer any questions you have on IRC.

The upgrade is planned to start at 12PM GMT which will be for most US visitors, the early morning hours of Friday, and will last at LEAST 6 hours, the actual time could be much longer.

Dave will probably have something to add to this post later today, so stay tuned!
