which bloody mobo for DDR/Athlon?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Me and my friend are about to upgrade our PC's, and wish to buy an Athlon (266FSB), and DDR - I dont have a clue about motherboards/chipsets tbh - so which motherboard should we get - and most importantly which one causes least probs with 2000/XP? I'd prefer a slightly slower reliable mobo than a fast one which botched up Soundblaster suppport etc...

Ive been lookin at the Asus ones

A7A(the ALi chipset r sumthin)

A7M (MP760 i think)

and the

A7S (SIS 725 r sumthin)

I heard the A7M has some probs with soundblaster,

And the A7A is slightly slow - so i dunno wtf to think eheh

Anywayz, any help would be much appreciated

:)

I Suggest you the mobo i just bought.

It's EPoX 8K7A and works decent, i haven't experienced any problems so far. It has AMD's 761 chipset with 2 DDR Slots, 6 PCI, 2x/4x AGP and supports the 1ghz+ thunder birds.

And if you're gonna overclock, this mobo is a blast. My friends have got their FSB to 170+mhz high!!(i haven't oc'ed it, will soon) no other mobo in the market can do that high FSB.

An important note: This mobo has also said to be having a few batches with loads of problems with the power supply and video, it's only a few particular batches tho. One of my friend's had to replce 5 boards until he got a good one! But that might just be a rare case and i got a good one right away, so have many others.

To sum it up, if you get a good one, it's fantastic.

for a clear unbiast view try here.

Anandtech has done a SocketA chipset roundup, featuring AMD's 760, VIA's KT133A, KT266, and SiS' 735. ALi MAGiK1 was a noticable absence. Anandtech went on and described each chipset briefly, then put them through a very comprehensive set of benchmarks. Not surprisingly, the SiS735 was able to earn the top spot in many of the bench trials. This roundup might you decide which chipset is the best for you, so go ahead and check it out.

ALSO

Digit-Life has again done a roundup, this time motherboards of VIA KT266 will battle it out, included in the roundup is Asus A7V266, Chaintech 7VJD&7VJD2, Epox 8KHA, Gigabyte 7VTX, MSI K7T266 Pro and Soltek 75DRV. A good read if you're seriously considering a KT266 motherboard.

and a final point

Many motherboard makers to drop SiS 735. According to the China Times, the SiS 735 chipset may be short lived. The article is in Chinese, however the summary of it is basically this: The SiS 735 chipset does not have very good yields, and is picky to 266 FSB settings and to certain memory modules. It is also known that VIA will soon be releasing an "enhanced" version of their KT266 chipset which will provide for performance equal to or surpassing SiS 735 at a similar cost. Because of these problems and Taiwan motherboard manufactures already established close relationship with VIA, many are postponing or dropping their SiS 735 products altogether. Only ECS continues mass production of this board and Chaintech in smaller quantities
