I hope the weather is good here, it's raining right now :(

it's been raining for the last three weeks and its going to rain for the next three weeks. Welcome to the west coast of canada world... we live in a rain forest, not igloos...

if the olympics were last year it would have been perfect

I wish I had bought tickets but I found they were too pricey and couldn't afford to take time off work to get a 3-ticket package. Anyhow, I took a few pictures tonight, I wish I was better with nighttime photography - I didn't know how to setup my camera properly during the most important time - when the torch bearer runs by. Most of my other shots are fine.

Anyhow, here's a pic I took tonight of the torch just before it went across the Burrard bridge (which leads to downtown Vancouver).

I didn't get anymore pics of the torch downtown since it was too crowded as I walked along and followed. PM me if you have a better pic, I'd like to send it to my folks and convince 'em I took it. :)

Wow.

An Olympic official says a men's Olympic luger who crashed during a training run has died. Apparently hit a steel pole near the finish line

Luge: Georgian luge slider suffers crash

  Quote
Whistler (AFP) - Georgian luge hopeful Nodar Muaritashvili suffered a crash after flying off the Olympic track on Friday during his second of two training runs, reports said.

He was immediately placed on a stretcher before he was taken away in an ambulance while an air ambulance was also on its way, the Globe and Mail said.

One of the favourites also got a scare with 2002 and 2006 gold medalist Armin Zoeggler of Italy crashing.

On Wednesday there were several crashes during women's luge training runs on a track widely-regarded as one of the most dangerous in the sport.

Romania's Violeta Stramaturaru crashed and was knocked unconscious for a few minutes and was taken to the hospital.

^ of all the sports in the world, luge and skeleton are easily one of the most dangerous. those people are nuts

If you see the video, the design of the place seems pretty nuts... I guess in hindsight it's obvious, but damn

It is bad.

Ugh I don't suggest watching it...watched it live and it is really bad!

Yeah its a design problem...however, nobody has ever launched from the tracks since it was opened a couple months back. You would think the only chance of launching is at the curve and towards the inside of the track not ping-ponging 2 times.

A coworker of mine knows people who saw the course - experienced atheletes in their own right. They said was only matter of time would be killed - apparently they said that months ago.

So sad. If he didn't die, the injuries would have been so serious he'd probably be a vegetable for the rest of his life. So in hindsight probably wasn't such a bad thing. I had a few minor concussions as a kid - it isn't fun when they bite you in the ass 20 years later. I couldn't imagine having significantly worse head injuries.

Anyone have Dish Network? If so what are the Channels(Name(s) and Number(s), Number(s) preferably) That the olympics on. I dont really wanna call them.

Im looking forward to a few sports like hockey, luging, basketball, a few more. Also I wanna watch it for MATISYAHU. Its a great honor for him to play and its amaznig he's playing. I knew about the guy when he was small in his career. Being able to play at the Olympics, EPIC.

@Luging Death: Ok that track is pretty intense and lugers have done stuff like that before, its just that Finishing Turn is where they ****ed up. If you watch it in slow mo, you can see him come around and quickly twist down into the narrow and HIT the wall. Well YEAH, if you dont make it curve into the track like all the other turns then he's gonna die.

I hope they either FIX IT, or ditch it.

I didn't watch the video earlier. I can usually tolerate some pretty sick medical things (watch open heart surgery and eat) but this is just sick. He's thrown around like a rag doll. I'm between throwing up and crying at the same time. I hope the track designers are sued for gross negligence. I only wish they would go to prison too. There is something seriously wrong with the end of the track compared to any others I've seen before. I had wished to buy tickets to ludge in combo with speedskating and snowboarding.

This is a video of the Lilehamer course. Notice there's a nicer transition on end. I think the banks on each side at the end are a bit higher. The concrete poles are still there which the poor guy hit. But the transition on the corner in Vancouver here is way too steep.

why exactly? the athletes know what they are doing. Its a dangerous sport. The track is the most dangerous ever but it got approved, blame the olympic committee. freak accident, i don't think anyone is to blame. **** happens.

Its probably the most (or close enough to) the most dangerous Olympic sanctioned sport. The problem as I see it is that momentum and the skill of the athlete alone should carry enough of a safety margin for the majority of the track such that is makes it a safe-enough sport to compete in. Memory of the track also plays a huge role. Its just the last turn is just too darn sharp.

Edit -

@ JEDI - I'd agree. And consider too the bobsled (up to 4 atheltes) competes on the same tracks AFAIK and there is also a 2-person ludge event.

I'm getting ready to go to opening ceremony event. I will be standing in the streets - poor me. :( Don't live too far away though.

NBC is the network.

Olympic basketball is a summer Olympic sport.
