This is simply fantastic. I've been using this for a while from DA but didn't realize you posted it here too. It's a great way to make an easy change to your computer without patches or replacing system files. Good work :)

any one got any suggestians how to change the start orb in windows vista ? .......... thnks in adv.

In Windows Vista, the start orb is changed by the themes. So you will have to change the theme.

Still doesn't work on my win7 x64 PC, maybe its cause of the higher DPI? it worked on some other PC's i tried; x86.

All goes ok, but icon is not changed.

Do I need to turn off UAC for this?

No, just run as Admin.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, I'm running WIndows 7 Enterprise (Build 7600) X64. When I run the app as admin I don't get an error. I try to change the start orb and it looks like it should work, explorer.exe restarts but the orb stays the same. If I look in explorer.exe using resource hacker it even looks like some of the bitmaps have been changed over but I still don't see the new orb. I've tried re-installing (my old install was new too) and running updates, I've disabled UAC just in case, and nothing seems to work. Does this have to do with my resolution or something maybe? This is driving me nuts.

Ahh nevermind I got it. It seems that it would only display after I went to Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> DIsplay and changed to "smaller 100%". I wanted this setting anyhow. The giant windows fisher price icons are a big pain in the ass. Thanks! This saved me from having to reshack the start menu!!
