Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has dismissed suggestions Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard will have to be sold to ease the club's mounting debt.

Financial reports released for the first time show the club itself made an operating loss before tax of ?16 million in the year ending July 31 2009, down from a profit ?10.2m profit in the previous 12 months. With their rivals sensing weakness there have already been reports of Chelsea preparing a ?70m bid for Torres and Real Madrid considering a ?35million offer for Gerrard.

"There is absolutely no reason to sell either Torres or Gerrard," said Broughton, brought in last month by the co-owners to oversee the sale of the club.

"I don't want to sell either of them. Rafa does not want to sell either of them, the club is not looking to sell them.

"We don't need to do it to pay off any debt.

"Torres is one of the great players and every club would love to have him. We have got him and there is no intention of selling him."

On Thursday Broughton held his first long-awaited meeting with Benitez, during which the pair discussed the current situation regarding the search for new owners and also plans for the summer squad rebuilding.

There are further get-togethers scheduled but with debt levels increasing at the club it seems unlikely Benitez will be handed the ?50m-plus he feels he needs to get the club back into Champions League contention.

"We have met, it was a frank exchange of views, constructive and very helpful," said Broughton. "The squad does need strengthening and that is an on-going process which will not be stopped by the sale.

"We have sat down with Rafa to determine what is the strength of it (the squad), what it needs, who are the right players and who needs to be sold. What I have asked from Rafa is what any football club board ask at the end of the season.

"It is for an appraisal of each of the players, where the weak links are, which players he would prefer to sell if he had the opportunity, which positions he needs to fill, who are his prime candidates and what would be his priorities."

Defender Danny Wilson is expected to agree a move from Rangers to Liverpool in the next seven days.

The 18-year-old has just over a year left on his contract and had turned down the new deal on offer to him.

Liverpool had a previous bid turned down but have returned with an improved offer in the region of ?2m plus add-ons that Rangers have deemed acceptable.

The Ibrox club stood to lose the player for around ?500,000 in compensation had he not been sold this summer.

Wilson, who made his debut in October, was recently voted PFA Scotland young player of the year, having made over 20 appearances - two in the Champions League - and scored once this season.

Injury ended his campaign prematurely, but he will leave Ibrox with winners' medals from Rangers' Scottish Premier League and Co-operative Insurance Cup triumphs.

If you have a player with 9 months left on a contract and a club offer you over ?10,000,000 then take it, don't fool around and get greedy and want ?16,000,000.

Well you have to remember they were in the Champions League, so they probably never wanted to sell him in the first place.

We have 5 strikers currently that play first team football.

Yes but only one of them is good enough to wear the shirt. And he always without fail misses chunks of the season due to injury.

We need someone who is young to replace Fabianski.. Akinfeev and Lloris won't sit on the bench.. so maybe Joe Hart or Vincenzo Fiorillo? We MUST sell Almunia and sign an experienced keeper..

Juve aren't in the Champions League next season and Buffon would probably be available for about 10m pounds. Not that Wenger is the type to splash out (is 10m "splash out" for one of the worlds best keepers, who at 32, has probably 6-7 seasons left in him?). And Hugo Lloris won't sit on the bench, are you mad? He's a top class keeper, in no circumstance wound anyone want him anywhere but infront of goal. But he'll cost alot more than 10m pounds anyway.

Manchester United have agreed to sell goalkeeper Ben Foster to Birmingham City for ?6million.

The two clubs negotiated the fee this weekend and the 27-year-old will move to Birmingham where he will see some regular first-team football next season.

United with receive ?4million up front and the rest of the money to be paid will be determined by Foster?s performance and the amount of international appearances he earns for England, according to the Daily Mail.

Foster was stuck behind United number one Edwin van der Sar this season and made only nine Premier League starts for the Red Devils.

With United targeting Schalke?s Manuel Neuer and Hugo Lloris of Lyon, Foster believes that his days at Old Trafford are over, bidding his team-mates farewell at Carrington this weekend.

Arsenal have been given the green light to move for Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure by the player's agent.

Arsene Wenger has been linked with the Ivorian midfielder for several years, and now the Arsenal boss is thought to have the financial power to move this summer.

With Barca also reportedly after Cesc Fabregas, the possibility of a player-plus-cash move has also been mooted by the British media, with the Gunners set to earn from any possible deal involving the young Spaniard.

Toure moved from the Ivory Coast to Belgian side Beveren in 2001, and two years later he moved to Ukranian side Metalurh Donetsk.

The powerful midfielders big break came in 2005 when he signed for Olympiakos, earning the nickname 'the new Patrick Vieira' during his season at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

A move to French club AS Monaco followed the next year, and afrer an impressive season in Ligue 1 Toure moved to Spanish giants Barcelona for ?9 million in 2007.

After a steady start at the Nou Camp, Toure began to feature heavily at the end of the 2008/2009 campaign. He has gone on to feature 33 times this season, scoring once and providing four assists.

The Ivorian's agent, Dimitri Seluk, told The People that the Emirates was his player's number one destination were he to leave Catalonia, opening the door to Wenger if he wants to make his move when the window opens in June.

"Yaya is happy at Barcelona and will only leave for a big project at a big club," said Seluk.

"But in England there are sides with great prestige and that could be decisive. Arsene Wenger knows Yaya, and I am convinced he could be a success with Arsenal."

The north London club are keen to strengthen in the summer as they look to bring some silverware to the Emirates, and Frenchman Wenger could see Toure as one of the missing parts to a potential title winning side.

Roberto Mancini will this summer look to attempt something of a coup by snapping up Real Madrid?s French international pair Lassana Diarra and Karim Benzema. The Manchester City boss has been told he will have ample cash to make new signings despite failing to secure a top four finish.

The Eastlands manager hopes to persuade both Frenchman to make a move to the Premier League side by guaranteeing first team football. Both Diarra and Benzema are by no means first choice at Real and could be tempted by a move ahead of a potential new round of Galaticos joining the Spanish giants.

Manchester City are also ready to have something of a clear out and it appears that no one is safe from a potential cull with a number of big names reportedly set to be sold as Mancini looks to bring in more of his own signings and is ready to offer a combined fee of ?40m for the pair.

Gonzalo Higuain hailed the Real Madrid fans after what reportedly could have been his final game for the club.

Higuain is believed to be one of the lowest paid players at the club, having joined from River Plate in 2007.

The Argentina international has since become one of the most feared strikers in Europe and is expected to lead the line for his country at this summer's World Cup finals.

Higuain was given a rapturous reception from the club's fans as he was substituted towards the end of their 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Reports in Spain now suggest that after failing to negotiate a new deal, Real are ready to sell with speculation linking him with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Higuain refused to talk of his future but admitted that he was honoured by the Real fans and the support they have given to him.

"I'm proud to take the applause from these people who know that in the three-and-a-half years I've been here I have given everything for this club," said Higuain.

"Whenever I go out to play, I've left everything on the field.

"Sometimes I succeed and sometimes it goes wrong, but I'm proud of being able to wear the shirt of this team."

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is closing in on the ?11million capture of Hamburg defender Jerome Boateng.

City have been courting the 21-year-old's signature for some time and a deal could be completed by the end of the week.

The Eastlands outfit are believed to be preparing a big-money bid for the German international's services after the end of the Premier League and Bundesliga seasons.

Mancini, who has vowed to bring in fresh faces despite question marks over his own future, believes Boateng's versatility will prove very useful.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "We are quite close to signing him.

"Boateng is a good player, a young player and strong. He plays for the national team and there is a good chance to get him.

"He can play three different positions; central defence, right full-back or in midfield. If we find a player like that it is better for us."

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has admitted it will be very difficult to lure Fernando Torres to Eastlands this summer.

The Liverpool frontman has been linked with a big-money move to City but their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League could scupper any possible deal.

Tottenham pipped the Blues into the Premier League's top four this season and will now be rubbing shoulders with Europe's elite next term, unless they lose in the qualifying round of the competition.

City will be playing in the Europa League instead, as will Liverpool, and Mancini believes it will harm their chances of signing top players.

"Can we attract the top, top players, like Torres? I don't know, but I don't think so," he said in The Sun.

"If we finished in the top four, it would be better and easier to attract them.

"In this situation it is different. There are probably some players who want to play in the Champions League and not in the Europa League.

"But there are a lot of players in Europe who will want to play for Manchester City next year.

"We won't be playing in the Champions League but we must try to win the other competitions and finish in the top four in the Premier League."

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid's Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, who could cost ?38million.

Higuain is contracted to Real Madrid until the end of the 2012/2013 campaign but talks on an extended deal at the Santiago Bernabeu are believed to have stalled over a wage dispute.

Real are believed to be prepared to cash in on the 22-year-old rather than allow him to see out his deal and reports earlier in the year suggested the Madrid side would be willing to allow him to leave for a fee of around ?38million.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be a big admirer of the Argentina international and the Old Trafford boss is keen to increase his options in attack over the summer as striker Wayne Rooney has shouldered much of the scoring responsibility at United over the course of the current campaign.

However, Ferguson will face a battle to capture Higuain with Manchester City, Chelsea and a number of clubs in the Italian Serie A said to be keen.

Twente manager Steve McClaren is set to become the manager of Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, according to reports in Germany.

The former England manager has been reportedly been pursued by a host of clubs after guiding Dutch team Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title last week, and it now seems Wolfsburg are primed to capture his signature.

The English boss was also being tipped to take the hot seat at Hamburger SV, Liverpool, West Ham United and Aston Villa.

But McLaren was spotted in Wolfsburg last week meeting with club officials, only to leave without signing a deal.

The 49-year-old spent the weekend in England mulling over the offer, which, according to local Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) newspaper, was just awaiting a signature to complete the move.

"I don't want to say anything yet because that would not be good for the situation," McLaren told WAZ on Saturday.

"I will say in the next few days what I will do next season."

Wolfsburg ended their domestic campaign by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 on Saturday and club managing director Dieter Hoeness wanted to announce who would take over the vacant role immediately after the game.

"If it were up to us, then things would be tied up very quickly," said Hoeness.

The former German champions have been searching for a replacement following the sacking of Armin Veh in January.

Cracking player is Higuain.

Real Madrid's stupidity never fails to amaze me. They bring in great players like Kaka, Ronaldo and Alonso for ?200 million... yet they let brilliant players like Sneijder, Robben and Higuain slip away unnoticed.

(Y) Can't agree more.. Wenger said he would wait outside their gates for whoever they let go this time around.. but can't see him getting Higuain.. our weakness is more in defence as we have already signed Chamakh now.. ManU has a better chance of Higuain.. Berbatov will leave.. to City? They are collecting strikers and especially Utd and Arsenal players.. so we might as well see Berbatov there next season..

According to AS, Real Madrid defensive midfielder Lassana Diarra could return to the Premier League next season as Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in signing the Frenchman and could pay nearly ?20 million for his services.

After a very good start to the season, in which he was frequently compared to fellow Frenchman and ex-Blancos midfielder Claude Makelele, Diarra lost the confidence of coach Manuel Pellegrini, meaning he had fewer minutes and less importance within the team structure.

Thus, Los Blancos will reportedly attempt to sell the midfielder with the hope of cashing in on what could be a significant transfer fee.

Madrid bought Lass as a 2008 winter transfer recruit from Portsmouth and while United are said to be interested, Arsenal are also reportedly tempted to take the player back to the Emirates Stadium where he spent the 2007-08 season.

Diarra was called up to Raymond Domenech's French national team squad yesterday for participation in this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has hinted he could leave the Allianz Arena this summer.

The 25-year-old Germany international is set to play a key role for the national team in South Africa after enjoying a solid season with Louis van Gaal's treble chasing side.

Yet he came in for stick from Bayern fans earlier this season when things were not going according to plan and this could prompt a move.

The 25-year-old told Bild newspaper: "It was often the case in the first half of the season that I would misplace a pass in the first 20 minutes and I would be whistled at immediately.

"There were even whistles for me at the annual general meeting and that hurt."

He added: "You never know what happens after a World Cup.

"I am really happy that we played such a good season, but to say now that I will always play for Bayern Munich would be wrong.

"Then if you do actually move, it would be an unfair proclamation to make to the fans."

Attractive destination

If he did choose to leave Bayern, Schweinsteiger admitted that the Premier League would be an attractive destination.

He added: "When things were not going well, we were being whistled at immediately in the Allianz Arena, but that sort of thing does not happen in England.

"I would like to have the whole stadium behind us even in difficult times."

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has revealed he would love it if Fernando Torres jumped ship to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Drogba clinched the Premier League's golden boot award last weekend as the Blues romped home to claim the title with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Wigan.

He has been partnered by French forward Nicolas Anelka this season but admits he would welcome any move for Liverpool star Torres, which has been speculated.

"I have heard the talk about Torres maybe coming in and I would welcome it, of course," he said.

"Every time there is a new player coming here it's making the club bigger and giving us a lot of strength.

"If there is a chance for him to come he will be welcome, because any help is welcome."

Drogba has netted 84 Premier League goals in 166 appearances since his move to Chelsea in 2004 but knows the last campaign has been the best of his career so far.

"This has been the best season of my career. In 2007 I scored 33 goals and 20 in the league and really it's amazing," he added.

"I feel that, season after season, I'm getting better.

"I want to finish the job this year with the FA Cup final. To win the double would mean a lot to the club and to us as players."

Duno if this is true or not:

Catalan newspaper Sport reported Friday that Henry had signed a pre-contract agreement with the club, with the only surprise being that the news had taken so long to leak out. Sources in Barcelona told SI.com that Henry's manager Darren Dein, a lawyer and the son of ex-Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, had tied up a deal in principle with the Red Bulls as long as three weeks ago

Skysports.com understands Manchester City have tabled a big money offer for Aston Villa winger James Milner.

The England international enjoyed a sparkling 2009/10 campaign, considerably raising his profile.

Reports in January speculated that a number of top clubs were keeping tabs on the talented 24-year-old, with it widely believed that there is still more to come from him in the future.

City have now made the first move, with it believed that Roberto Mancini is willing to part with around ?20million to take the reigning PFA Young Player of the Year to Eastlands.

It is easy to understand why the Blues are so keen on the former Leeds and Newcastle man, as he has just finished his most productive season to date.

A respectable return of 12 goals from midfield marks him out as a useful addition to any side, while his versatility can also prove priceless.
