Football Editor: A bit more on the Insua story and Liverpool have confirmed the left-back has left the club's pre-season training camp to travel for talks with Fiorentina. Click here for more.

I think Real Madrid are doing an awesome mercato. Di Maria, Canales, Pedro Leon and refusing to go too high for Maicon are good signs that the direction have total confidence in Mourinho and are willing to let him make the transfer decisions.

I'll be shocked if he ends up with them.

We were led to believe that he left because we weren't willing to raise his wages and Liverpool definitely isn't the club I would expect to pay more than 90k a week to an injury prone Joe Cole.

Did anyone read that bit about Mascherano avoiding contact with Hodgson, like not answering his texts and calls

He's a free agent.. no money needed.. just pay his wages and he's yours.. with Benayoun out I think you can afford him.. can prove to be an excellent partner for Stevie G..

while what you say makes sense, no transfer fee and what not... but imma stick with my original statement

ha, with what money?

... we are broke as a joke

i would LOVE to have him on the squad though

well half Stevie G's 100k odd a week and maybe you could :p

captain amazing goes no where!

He's a free agent.. no money needed.. just pay his wages and he's yours.. with Benayoun out I think you can afford him.. can prove to be an excellent partner for Stevie G..

We're paying ?180,000 a DAY in interest payments. We need Benayoun's ?60,000 a WEEK to help cover a LITTLE of that.

We don't want Tom and George to struggle claiming their expenses off us now do we ;) ?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has given his full backing to Dimitar Berbatov, a player he believes is a class act.

The Bulgarian striker has struggled to live up to expectations since joining the Red Devils in a big-money move from Tottenham in 2008.

He was tipped to make the same kind of impression at Old Trafford as the legendary Eric Cantona, with his nonchalant style easily comparable to that of the Frenchman.

Berbatov is yet to justify such lofty billing, scoring only 26 goals in 86 appearances, and has drawn criticism from certain sections of the United support for an apparent lack of effort.

Ferguson, though, is adamant that the languid frontman will silence his detractors, with a star showing in Friday's 3-1 victory over Celtic likely to have done his confidence no harm.

The Scot is keen to stress that he has complete faith in the 29-year-old, with reports on Sunday again claiming that United could be prepared to sacrifice Berbatov in their efforts to land Bayern Munich full-back Philipp Lahm.

Ferguson said: "Berbatov got man of the match and I think he deserved that, no question. His performance was excellent.

"In the second half he produced some fantastic moments. It underlines the one great factor - the class he has.

"You cannot take that away from him, no matter the criticism.

"It doesn't come from our camp. When we see a performance like that we know we have the right player."

Carles Puyol believes Arsenal are wrong to prevent Cesc Fabregas from joining Barcelona.

The Gunners have already rejected a bid from the Spanish champions and have reiterated that the midfielder will not be leaving the club this summer.

However, the Barcelona captain insists Arsenal need to allow Fabregas a move back to his former club, not just for the sake of the player but for his family.

"I think Arsenal need to respect his class and show the same class by giving the guy who has given so much to them the move that he and his family want.? Puyol told the Daily Star Sunday.

"He isn't just being deprived of moving to the best club in the world, more importantly, he is being deprived of coming home.

"He has tried everything to win trophies at Arsenal and when he sees the success so many of his Spanish team-mates are having at Barcelona, it's only natural that he should want to be a part of that.

"Cesc is the future of Barcelona and Arsenal can't do anything to stop that.

"I have just spent six weeks with him and there is only one club he wants to be at."

Nice president Gilbert Stellardo says Liverpool will jump to the head of the queue for Loic Remy if they match West Ham's offer.

The Hammers have matched Nice's ?10million (?8.4m) asking price for the 23-year-old, but their instalment proposal is not to the club's liking.

Stellardo says the club are happy with the value of West Ham's offer, although Liverpool will be in pole position should they match their rival's bid.

Nice have no qualms cashing in on the France international, but insist they will require all the money up front and will not settle for an instalment plan.

Remy is one of France's hottest properties having scored 15 goals in 33 appearances last season and Tottenham are also rivalling Liverpool and West Ham for his services.

"For the moment it's the same status quo, but if Liverpool make an offer things will be done swiftly," he told L'Equipe.

"The amount (offered by West Ham) suits me but not the payment method.

"West Ham want to buy Loic because they think he could rapidly be worth ?10million more if he plays in England. They don't want us to pay the full sum all at once."

Pure garbage.

Looks like Joey will join Liverpool.

I'm absolutely gutted for his decision and disgusted at some of our supporters calling him Judas, traitor etc

On the other hand, the number of Chelsea supporters at Liverpool is alarmingly increasing
