A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has hit central Chile, killing at least 78 people, ministers say.

The quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in affected areas and appealed for calm.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific island nations.

Alerts were also earlier issued for Antarctica and Central America.

Santiago airport has been closed and all flights cancelled until further notice, airline officials say. Flights are being diverted to Mendoza in Argentina.

The earthquake is the biggest to hit Chile in 50 years.

Giving details of the latest casualties, Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma said 34 of the deaths were in Maule, 13 in the Santiago municipality and four in Valparaiso.

"The death toll will continue rising," he said.

President Bachelet said: "People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information [we have] we will share immediately."

She said a "wave of large proportion" had affected the Juan Fernandez island group, reaching halfway into one inhabited area.

She said if there were more aftershocks, people in coastal areas should go to higher ground.

Ms Bachelet warned people not to travel on roads in affected areas as a number of bridges were down.

Chilean officials said the worst affected town appeared to be Parral, close to the epicentre.

Chilean television said there had been a fire involving chemicals in the town of Colina, 20km north of Santiago, but that it was now under control.

Several hospitals have had to be evacuated in a number of areas, including Santiago, because of structural damage.

I just heard on CNN, the tsunami that's supposed to hit Hawaii is expected to be 10 - 15ft in height. Not terrible but not great.

Our thoughts are with those in Chile. Good luck and we wish you well.

And good luck to all those that are in the path of the Tsunami. Please check in with us and tell us what you've seen and share what is happening where you live.

R.E.M - It's The End of The World as We Know It

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and

snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world

serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed

it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, the Ladder

start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire

in a fire, representing seven games, and a government

for hire at a combat site. Left of west and coming in

a hurry with the furys breathing down your neck. Team

by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.

Look at that low playing. Fine, then. Uh oh,

overflow, population, common food, but it'll do to Save

yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,

listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and

the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,

patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty

psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Alot of Tsunami warnings, and Easter Island is being evacuated.

Hopefully the death toll of the earthquake won't be as bad as Haiti, at least Chile should have adequate basic emergency services.

The preliminary death toll I heard was around 80 - 85. Much better than Haiti. Still awful. Something like that sneaks up out of nowhere and kills indiscriminately. It's all a 'wrong place at the wrong time' situation.

No good.

Yep, just got awoken by the civil defense sirens.

*gets out his surfboard and heads towards the beach*

but if you do make it through alive, then more power to you!

latest prediction is that the wave(s) will be over 8 foot when they hit Hawaii

That's predicted in Hilo on the Big Island (the city that was hit by a tsunami back in 1960). On Oahu (the main island) its expected that there's a 1ft wave, but flooding is a possibility.

If I don't post back for a few hours, stay tuned to the news.

Source? 1 ft wave? seriously? that's hardly a concern at all, lol. a person could get on the 5th step of a stair way and not be in danger...
