England's 23:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.

Defenders: Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Strikers: Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

Darren Bent, Leighton Baines, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker and Adam Johnson were the other six not to make the cut.

Also no Walcott... although I have to say the biggest shock was inclusion of Heskey over Bent..

England captain Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after hurting his left knee following a challenge with Emile Heskey during Friday's first training session.

He emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who had been put on standby, is expected to fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours.

Vice-captain Steven Gerrard will step up to lead the side at the World Cup.

What's next? Will Carragher get in the starting XI?

Anyway, not having Rio will be a big blow for England.

WOOOOOOOOOOO captain amazing is the captain of england!!! should have been captain in the first place, especially since baby terry lost his spot.

and honestly, rio is the most over rated defender in the world... every man u game i watch the guy gets embarassed by someone or makes a REALLY REALLY dumb mistake.

Carra is more than capable of taking that spot.. but will Capello have to add another defender to leave Rio home? Sol?

carraghers good, but him and terry have no pace whatsoever... i just dread to see how each of them defend against a top forward. actually i know what will happen, terry will end up deliberately dragging them down for a free kick or penalty, and carragher will launch in with a reckless challenge for similar results.

in the space of two seasons the heart of englands defense has gone from being one of the best in the world (on paper at least), to mediocre. hopefully ashley cole stays fit, as he's the only defender we have who's currently in a good run of form.

that's my boy... but he gets away with it most of the time and his positioning is usually perfect. carra is a great defender. but i do see what you mean though, you just expect him to do something like that.

so many times this year carragher has done something like that, and you are just thiking "**** carragher" but as liverpool fan and him being a son of liverpool, you love him soo much and he's soo good that you dont really mind when he does it.

France 0 - 1 China blink.giflaugh.gif

France coach Raymond Domenech has played down the importance of Friday's friendly defeat to China but admits there is some cause for concern.

For those of you thinking France might have played their second string players.. here's the starting lineup:

France has no chance until they get rid of Domenech..

Dutch winger Arjen Robben is a major doubt for the World Cup finals after limping off during his country's 6-1 friendly rout of Hungary in Amsterdam.

Second-half substitute Robben scored two goals before injuring his hamstring when in possession in the 85th minute.

Coach Bert van Marwijk revealed Robben will undergo a scan on Sunday to determine the extent of the problem.

"He felt a sharp pain," said van Marwijk. "That does not bode well, but I do not lose hope."

Robben has been in top form for German Double winners and losing Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and his absence would be a devastating blow to the Dutch.

The team fly out to South Africa on Saturday night without the former Chelsea and Real Madrid player and captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst fears the 26-year-old may not even follow his team-mates to the finals.

"It was a magnificent match but Arjen's injury overshadowed everything," said Feyenoord's van Bronckhorst. "I'm not very optimistic. He's in real pain and finds it difficult to walk."

Van Marwijk, too, was stunned by Robben's rotten luck. "My first thought was this can't be true, the end the final warm-up match, everyone is fit and then this," he said.

"We now have to wait. I can replace Robben until 24 hours before our opening match but as long as there is hope he recovers in time he will stay in the squad."

The Netherlands open their campaign on 14 June against Denmark, with Japan and Cameroon their other opponents in Group E.

Van Marwijk's side have continued their excellent form from qualifying, when they topped their group with a 100% record, by thrashing Ghana 4-1 in a warm-up match four days ago in Rotterdam before humiliating the Hungarians by an even greater margin.

After Balazs Dzsudzsak had given the visitors a sixth-minute lead, Arsenal striker Robin van Persie drew the sides level before the break.

In the second half, though, it was plain-sailing for the Dutch with goals from Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Mark van Bommel and Eljero Elia blowing away their opponents.

However, van Marwijk admitted that the convincing win would be scant consolation if his worst fears over Robben were to be realised.

"I would rather lose this match and have Arjen stay fit," he said.

Van Marwijk also has another injury concern in central defender John Heitinga. The Everton player was substituted after an hour against the Hungarians with an ankle problem.
