Yes, it kind of does. I'd say it does get more interesting as the story goes on.

To me, your inclusion of the words "kind of" says it all.

I personally feel it does not really get better, that the game was one of the more tedious games this generation actually, but I still played it and beat it for the story (at least the original game, cannot say the same for American Nightmare, especially since it repeated areas).

Basically you will get a stronger flashlight and slightly better weapons, but the actual combat itself does remain quite the same from Hour 2 to Hour 12. Not a huge difference at all. It was one of the bigger overall disappointments IMHO, as it had SO much potential.

I've only just bought this game (a bit late, I know) but I was wondering, does the gameplay pick up in later chapters? I've played for about 4 hours, I'm part way through chapter 3, enjoying the story but unfortunately finding the actual gameplay/combat extremely tedious. Does gameplay/combat get better? If not I'll just finish reading the story online.

It really is a story driven game, and less gameplay and fighting. As soon as you are OK with that, things are soo sooo soooo much better. I loved this game and the story.

I need to play this it seems, another great game which has found its way to my Steam library without ever being touched.

A story driven game? EEEP, I can't wait to play it now.

It does look bland though, hope injectors will help me get a better visual experience.

Didn't like it at first, the limited sprint was annoying but once I figured out how to take down the "taken" it got better, ended up really liking it. Can't say the same for American Nightmare, having to replay the same bits 3 times over was ridiculous and tedious. Could and should have been much better.
