Windows 7 Multiple Network Addresses

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

OK so this is going to be very higher grade but I figured it's probably the best place to ask ...

In Windows XP, I could set two (or more) IP addresses per network interface and Windows would only run the file and printer sharing on the first one, depending on what order I set them in the properties.

In Windows 7, if I do the same thing then it always picks up the wrong address and not the one I want it to run file sharing on.

For example ...

1 network card with 192.168.xx address and 172.xx address

Windows XP - Runs file sharing on the 192.168.xx address as expected

Windows 7 - Runs file sharing on the 172.xx address no matter the settings

When I am being connected to by my IP address it works file, but the computer name resolves to the wrong address if using 7.

If you already tried the advanced options for the network connections maybe you could just add an entry in the lmhosts.

By advanced i mean advanced for the network connections, not for the TCP/IP.

And add the entry at LMHOSTS if you are using the lookup function for it.

And why in the world would you do such a thing in the first place?? Why do you think you need more than 1 IP address on an interface?

Anyway -- your issues is sounds like what krpano is talking about name resolution issues, not sharing.. File sharing will be done on all the IPs you give it..

So for example -- I added the 172.16.1.100/16 IP to my win 7 box, I then added 172.16.1.101 to my 2k8 box -- as you can see I can access shares on both IPs, but the win 7 orig 192.168.1.100 address, and the added 172.16 address.

If you want some host name to resolve to a specific IP, then setup your dns/host/lmhost files how you want.. But when you add multiple IPs to your box, file and print sharing will be available on all the IPs -- unless you have set your software firewall to only allow access on specific network.

Again -- I just really don't see the point to doing something like this in the first place.

edit: here I quickly added some names to my host file -- see I can now ping them or access them by their names I entered in the host file.
