Go to your Google Mail settings, and click on 'Labs,' hunt down the lab called 'Unread message icon' and enable it. Then pin the tab and voila, no need for an add-on.

Not a bad substitute. I still like being able to open/reply/delete from the browser icon that the chrome extension adds.

Trying my best to stay with Firefox 4 for a while to give it a fair run. I've had to turn off the text acceleration, just can't handle the fonts and won't put myself through it when I have no alliances and will happily use Chrome.

Now back to extensions again, is there anything a bit more up to date that's like Barlesque? Mozilla really have made a hash of the addons bar having it requiring a load of screen estate for what will probably only be a handful of icons for most people.

I also assume Fast Dial is a good choice for a speed dial page? Shame Mozilla haven't made one of these yet.

I currently use an extension actually called Speed Dial, which works well. I don't know which one people prefer. Otherwise I haven't found anything that exactly replicates the Chrome extension.

Do you happen to know of any good gmail addons for customizing it? Minimalist Gmail seems to be out of date. Chrome has one of a similar name that is awesome.

Also any CSS editors as noob friendly as stylebot? - https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/oiaejidbmkiecgbjeifoejpgmdaleoha

You can literally just click parts of webpages and hide it.

Thanks

There's an optional update for Windows 7 that's supposed to improve startup times for Firefox 4 (with HW acceleration enabled). See: KB2505438

It wasn't start up times, more that it would just stop reacting to anything for a while.

wow page scrolling and performance is way better! sweeet!!!! facebook was so laggy and now much better. this forum renderes better and I even notice new text effects. neat.

I used it and it actually slowed down some sites.

Not liking the lack of bottom status bar. used addonbar to fill the void and have access to addons. why they did that I don't know!

an odd tooltip displays the url loading info though but it breaks styles since it sticks out.

I did notice one bug. when messing with the settings for a while I then tried to click on one of my tabs and it wouldn't let me. it did nothing when I clicked on it. hope that doesn't happen again.

I disabled hardware acceleration (fonts looked way too messed up and issues with visual glitches with aero, specifically the border around the window). My laptop specs are: Sony Vaio FW (VGN-FW140D) - Intel? Core? 2 Duo Processor P8400 2.26GHz | 3GB SDRAM | 250GB HDD @ 5400rpm | ATI Mobility Radeon? HD3470 256MB. Are there any disadvantages to turning it off?

EDIT: Using Windows 7 32-bit

Updated a few minutes ago, all seems to be working well except that the actual loading of the pages seems slower now. I think I may have used fasterfox on my old installation and then uninstalled it after applying the tweaks it provided. Would it be recommended to do the same with Firefox 4, or is there a better tweak / addon to use to decrease loading times of web pages?

Create a new profile and see how it works

Thanks, i ended up just installing fasterfox (go here to download it if anyone wants to try), applied the 'turbo' preset, and then uninstalled fasterfox. Seems to be quicker now :)

On a side note, does www.adobe.com look weird for anyone?

It has just reached 3 Million downloads. I think it was released 8 hours ago ? 7am PDT or around 1:30 GMT ? If they can keep it going at this rate, it might break the record. What time is it in America now ? Europe which is the largest downloader so far is cooling down but I guess there might be a peak when USA goes into early night time.

I'm loving the new version!! My only real complaint that I haven't seen anyone discuss: How come when you go to customize and click add a new toolbar, then place an icon on there, it never saves? I could spend all kinds of time creating a kickass toolbar, just for it to disappear when I restart Firefox. What's up with that? Why would they give us an option to add a new toolbar if it won't save?? That has to be a bug, right?
