dnast
No. He's on b10pre - meaning prerelease beta 10, updated nightly (atm barely different to beta 9). Well, there have been around 200 bug fixes since b9 :p But seriously, nothing most people would notice if you didn't tell them. So, is it safer to use the betas or the nighties? dnast
So, is it safer to use the betas or the nighties? Well, the betas go through QA before being released so they are safer. I haven't had any real issues with the nightlies since I started using them months ago, but there's always a possibility something could go wrong. Just remember to back up your profile if you decide to regularly use nightlies. dmb219
I've been using the nightly builds as my default browser for weeks and it is very stable. I've been seeing the progress and not had any problems. I only use lastpass and xmarks and they work with the latest versions. The only problems may be with extensions that don't work. aznkid25
I've figured out that the cause of my high memory usage in beta 9 is due to my add-ons. I've tried to disable them all, and enable them one by one, but no matter which one I do enable, the memory spikes back up to around 200,000k. Is there anything the FF developers can do about this, or is it in the hands of the individual add-on developers? aznkid25
try turning on image discarding Is that something I need to do in about:config? What is the exact phrase I should search for? Edit: image.mem.discardable by default is set to "true". Is this what you are referring to? The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 16, 2011 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2011 Please tell me this fixes the font-weight bug. What one is that? (the only one I know of, is possibly related to the Firefox button) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/896934-meet-firefox-401/page/152/#findComment-593597156 Share on other sites
Guest
Is there a way to get the interface "compact" view on Mac? On Windows it appears only when maximized but I hope that's gonna be default in every case. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 16, 2011 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2011 Yeah, that certainly doesn't look right :/ I can still select the semi-bold variant here, I wonder what the difference is. Normal Weight - Semi-bold Weight - Bold Weight How does that render for you? Punio4
Wow.The font rendering in FF4 is horrible. The outlines are hazy, like someone inverted the RGB in Cleartype tuner. Looks especially sucky on light text on dark backgrounds... IE9's is loads better. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 16, 2011 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2011 IE9 uses the exact same API to render text that Firefox 4 does, the results will be a pixel-perfect match for each other. I could've sworn... *looks at screenshots* Well a little autosuggestion goes a long way, now doesn't it... My bad. Anyways, I still prefer cleartype on sub-20pt type... The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 16, 2011 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2011 DirectWrite still uses ClearType (when possible that is), ClearType is just MS's name for sub-pixel anti-aliasing (which OS X/Linux/BSD/etc. do) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/896934-meet-firefox-401/page/152/#findComment-593597748 Share on other sites

Punio4
I stand by my claim that Firefox4's font rendering is inferior to IE9s: The top one is IE9, the bottom one is FF4. Tracking and kerning is messed up, font weight too, and font hinting is non-existant. Just look at the 'w's and 'o's in the url bar. They're asymmetrical! Plus, the outlines are so hazy and light, it's hard to even look at.
