jnelsoninjax
OK, so I noticed the other day in the lower right corner of my desktop, a message stating that this copy of windows is not genuine. I go to the system properties and here is what I see: Now when I click on Activate now here is what happens: So I really do not know what to do, as this seems to be a unique problem to me! cybertimber2008
Call into the phone activation and tell them the problem? Try a Windows Repair, see if you can replace that file? Phenom II
looks like it has been cracked but the crack has failed some cracks disable / remove the slui and other software protection files, open command prompt with admin rights and type: sfc /scannow press enter and let it scan, then reboot Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/897162-windows-is-suddenly-not-activatedgenuine/#findComment-592567120 Share on other sites
jnelsoninjax
Actually that is when the issue started, just after do a sfc /scannow, because explorer kept crashing... and as for it being cracked, not likely as this is a copy I purchased via the student discount... Phenom II
well the sfc / command would replace any damaged / deleted system files, and usually this is the result you would see from a crack being replaced, but if it is 100% genuine, then try another sfc / and then reactivate with the key Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/897162-windows-is-suddenly-not-activatedgenuine/#findComment-592567134 Share on other sites

presence06
Maybe stupid but try a System Restore? Had a few clients with Vista laptop that started stating it wasn't a legal copy/genuine and doing a system restore fixed it.. but it was a windows update that caused it. farmeunit
I've been coming across that on several machines at work. All legally licensed. They are all XP though. Their all imaged from one machine, but they worked for the last 7 months. Until now . . . Usually they'll give me the activation error right away, but don't know why they're doing it now. jnelsoninjax
Well M$ in there infinite wisdom (stupidity) released an update to the Genuine Windows crap, and I have heard of many others having problems with there genuine copy of windows suddenly not being Genuine any more, so I either re-install, or attempt system restore, either way I think I'm better off just re-installing. Vista had issues with it too. I had an IDE update for my Nvidia drivers a few years ago and once I rebooted it said I had to activate Windows. I thought "WTF", put the key in and said it was invalid. Called Microsoft and they gave me a new key because it was a known issue. C'mon Microsoft. Is there a way to uninstall/remove the GA? I know there's a way to remove the Office Genuine Advantage. mrmomoman
M$ did screw up some already activated systems with one of the updates. I could look it up but :) I am too lazy. Some of my clients called and freaked out. I told them slow your roll ;) Just reactivate it. If you have a legally obtained copy of the Student version then change the Key and put in the same key again to activate. If that doesn't work then call M$ and they will happily provide you with the correct keys to get it activated. It's a simple call. soldier1st
i told you people that there was something fishy about one of those recent updates. i bet there will be a lawsuit about this about ms including a wga update with an update and it said nothing about it. GL In our case it's not quite as easy as a simple call, or activating online. We have a proxy server, which Windows won't recognize until you actually get into Windows, which you can't get into because it's not activated. And we get no phone reception inside the building. So I have to write down 20 installation codes, call MS, get 20 activation codes  Luckily I caught about half of them before it locked us out, but it's still a ridiculous amount of work to go through for something that has worked for 8 months just fine. I can understand having that issue with some I just imaged. That happens, and it's easy to fix. No reason for the others though. I've got a VLK now so that'll help hopefully, but we'll see. Sikh
I had this problem. Its just the update they released which broke it. Just download the Genuine Validation tool and it should validate. Mine did. Grindal
1. Go to your "Control Panel" 2. Double click the "Windows Update" Icon 3. On the left hand side click "View Update History" 4. At the top of that window under "Review your update history" click the link that says "Installed Updates" 5. Under uninstall updates find the update that says - "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB971033)" and uninstall it. 6. Reboot your computer. Now once it's rebooted it will still tell you that it's invalid. Do the following to finish the activation. 1. Click the Start Button, got to "All Programs" then "Accessories" 2. Right click on "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator" 3. In the command prompt windows type slmgr -rearm and press enter. (There is a space between slmgr and -rearm) This should reactive the copy again. Once it's reactivated you'll want to go back to Windows Update - click to view the update and right click on KB971033 and choose Hide Update. This will never allow it to download again.
