nycmattw
For some reason my modem always keeps on disconnecting and which leads to my router getting no connection. I'm just wondering is there a *.bat or a *.sh script that would allow for the modem to be disconnected and reconnected remotely? (Which means not getting my lazy butt down in the table and unplugging and plugging back in the wire again). Or is there an alternative to this? dezzo
If you use file sharing, such as BitTorrent, the large number of connections that it can sometimes open will cause some modems/routers to reboot or disconnect. If this is the case, lower the number of connections gradually until it stops. Also, check the log files for the modem and router for clues as to why it's disconnecting. Also, contact your ISP and get them to test your connection to see if the problem is on their end. Run some speed tests very late at night (or very early in the morning) using the Speakeasy Speed Test (which I find the most accurate) to see if you are getting anything close to your line speed. If you're not, it *could* indicate an issue with your connection. Most of this might not even apply, but it's something to check anyway. +BudMan MVC Posted June 17, 2010 MVC Share Posted June 17, 2010 You should be able to view the modem logs on 192.168.100.1 IP example here is my surboard logs As to rebooting it with a batch file?? If you can access its IP through your router, you can reboot it through its UI, just look at the configuration tab - at the bottom you should see a reboot button. You sure its your modem disconnecting and not a router issue with p2p traffic, lots of router have issues handling all the traffic p2p can create -- you might find better stability using a 3rd party firmware on your router that allows you to adjust timeouts for the connections to better handle p2p traffic. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted June 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 17, 2010 Go here to check your modem logs: http://192.168.100.1/logs.html If you're getting a lot of "No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out" errors, it means your modem's upstream power level is fluctuating beyond functional parameters. That, or the downstream power level is fluctuating as well. This could be caused by a number of things including faulty cabling, a bad splitter, or even a bad line amplifier in your area. I had a similar problem and I found out much later that it was caused by a bad splitter. The Surfboard will always show date and time from the 1970s before it has recieved the date time info from the CMTS so seeing those aren't unusual. I would recommend you check your signals though as the logs look like the modem is restarting (constantly reaquiring signals with the pre-CMTS cold boot date time) and no mention of a reboot in the log... I have the SB6120 though and it is my first cable modem so I'm not sure if yours usually lists reboots in the log or if it ommits some. I'm sure BudMan will clarify since he stated he owns your specific modem. +LogicalApex MVC Posted June 18, 2010 MVC Share Posted June 18, 2010 It's me pulling the plug. Why? It is more likely your router is the one having problems not your modem. Next time you have an issue reset your router not your modem and see what happens. My SB6120 rarely has issues. +BudMan MVC Posted June 18, 2010 MVC Share Posted June 18, 2010 (edited) "Well I look at my router and I see my modem light blinking" Which light? Your activity light should be blinking ;) If you loose sync you should not have to reset the modem to get it back... It should come back when the signals are correct level again, etc.. When this happens again - check the modem logs and signal levels before you pull the plug. edit: What exact lights are you seeing blink?? The one on your router or the one on your modem?? If your router, why are you resetting your modem?? Sounds like maybe your router just lost its IP or something? +BudMan MVC Posted June 18, 2010 MVC Share Posted June 18, 2010 Modem light?? There is no modem light on the router?, you mean the internet/wan light? And the light on the modem for PC is also blinking? What specific router do you have - so we can look to see what the blinking light actually means. Next time vs pulling the plug on the modem, take a look at your router status -- can you click to renew your internet IP? Lights blink meaning activity, if changing colors -- does it mean it can not get IP? Changing speed? Let us know the model number so we can look up exactly what light your talking about and what the blinking is suppose to mean. You should RARELY ever have to reset your cable modme -- I mean RARELY!!! Only time I have pulled the plug on mine is when I first got it, and when I have changed devices directly connected to it to free up the mac assignment, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/911620-my-modem-keeps-on-disconnecting/#findComment-592778218 Share on other sites
nycmattw
I am using a Belkin F5D8236-4 v2. There is a modem and internet light on the right. Really I never check the modem. I just check the router. I don't think I can renew my ip address through my router. On my router if all lights are blue then my internet is good. If my modem light on my router is blinking orange then its a bad thing. +BudMan MVC Posted June 19, 2010 MVC Share Posted June 19, 2010 Just took a look at the manual -- what a pos. Anyway -- vs powering off your modem.. Do you have sync light (online light) on your actual modem when your routers light comes on.. This would tell you your modem is connected to your ISP. Vs rebooting your modem, still sounds like a problem with your router -- reboot your router, from the manual its got a reset button on the back.. Does not clear setting unless you hold it for atleast 10 seconds.
