Why didn't they just take a picture of the car and put that into into the game and just said that it took them a long time to make? No one would ever know.

A picture just would not look as good :)

The replays in GT always look good.

Yup I remember back in the day thinking how good the replays in Gran Turismo looked on the PSOne, it seems I was wrong :(

Last month, Esquire packed its bags and headed to Tokyo to talk the torque with the legend that is Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo. You can read our exclusive interview with one of the gaming industry's pioneers in our December issue (on sale this Thursday, folks) but in the meantime, here are a few photos of our visit to the home of the greatest driving simulator ever made?

A miniature replica of the Ford GT40 at Polyphony Digital's development studio. Yamauchi is so taken with its timeless design that when it was re-commissioned, he purchased the first and last cars off the production line (in white and gunmetal grey, respectively)

In GT5, you can count on the weather making driving conditions that little bit more treacherous

The traditional Japanese Room, where Yamauchi and his team hold their brainstorming sessions

Yamauchi recently sat down with Red Bull Racing to design the fastest road car in the world. The result is the X1, a futuristic one-seater that shifts from 0-60 mph in 1.4 seconds. (Yes, you'll be able to drive it in GT5.)

Polyphony's staff rota lets Yamauchi and his team know where any employee is at a given time, with stickers denoting whether they're travelling, eating, on a break or sleeping in the office.

Yamauchi taking a rare minute's rest by Polyphony's testing desk. (FYI, the helmet isn't just for effect ? he races in real cars too.)

Gran Turismo 5 will go on sale next month on PlayStation 3.

From the article:

Polyphony's staff rota lets Yamauchi and his team know where any employee is at a given time, with stickers denoting whether they're travelling, eating, on a break or sleeping in the office.

I wonder if some of them are working so hard that they just don't leave the office anymore. They just take a power nap, get up, and get back to work  .

Must be a tough job making a game like this, especially right now with all of the pressure to finish up.

I thought the game was already finished, and that the delay is because they missed their deadline to get the copies manufactured?

Retailers: Gran Turismo 5 to miss Christmas release

by James Ransom-Wiley on Nov 2nd 2010 1:30PM

walmart-gt5-search-110210.jpg

Today was the day we were supposed to finally, maybe play Gran Turismo 5 -- not even Walmart, it seems, can get over the latest delay. A search for the game today on the retailer's site turned up an "In Stock" result (pictured above); though clicking through to the product prompted only a pre-order option.

While there remains no definitive release date for the comically-delayed sim racer, a Sony representative reiterated in a statement to Joystiq today that the publisher is "still aiming for this holiday" to launch GT5. Sony has backed up this target window by recently updating retailers, which passed the information along to their customers. Specifically, Amazon has notified GT5 pre-orderers of a "new delivery estimate based on the new release date" -- that date being December 31, 2010. (A full copy of one such email is posted after the break.)

Although there are exceptions (first-party Nintendo games tend to be released on Sundays), almost all video games are released on Tuesdays -- just like today -- in the U.S. And though Amazon appears to be acting on a date provided by the publisher, Sony confirmed December 31 is just a placeholder. "As far as the Amazon date goes," a Sony representative told us, "retailers have arbitrary dates that get listed to coincide with any given title's launch window if we haven't provided a specific date. So it's completely driven from their side [...] A placeholder if you will." Similarly, GameStop and Target now list January 1, 2011 placeholder release dates for GT5 (whereas GameFly is sticking with "TBD," for now).

Technically, you can get away with extending the holiday season into early January, and by all accounts, GT5 is still on track to meet this rather dubious date range. According to retailer expectations, however, no gamer -- big or small -- is going to be unwrapping Gran Turismo 5 from under the Christmas tree, or from any other location their loved ones might stack their presents this holiday. Unless, of course, Sony can pull off a last-minute miracle.

Amazon email notice to a Gran Turismo 5 pre-orderer:

Hello,

We have received new release date information related to your pre-ordered video game in the order you placed on August 04 2010. The release date for the video game listed below has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:

"Gran Turismo 5 Collector's Edition"

Just a placeholder? Probably will be 2011 then. Ahh well, as long as it comes out before Duke Nukem Forever, I'll be happy. :p

Gran Turismo 5 Goes Gold, Being Stamped “As We Speak”

500x_this_is_not_george_takei.jpg

While speaking with Jalopnik today at SEMA, Kazunori Yamauchi stopped short of providing a new release date, but was able to confirm the game discs are being stamped (produced) right now:

“The discs are being stamped as we speak.”

This means the gold master copy of the game has been delivered from Polyphony Digital, and should help calm any fears about the game slipping into 2011. Jalopnik will be posting more of their interview with Yamauchi shortly.

From Jalopnik:

The picture above is Kazunori making a disc-stamping motion with his hands as he answered our query on the ever-shifting release date. We did talk about a number of different topics other than the release — and we'll have more coming shortly — but for the moment, we thought we'd at least bring you that response.

Back to 2010 then! :)

BTW, I just saw the name of the picture...

This has been a huge disappointment...

Even after letting all my friends know about the delay some of them still went to check today as a few local stores advertised it as releasing today... so hopeful.

Could they at least release a Demo... While the Prologue was fun to play when it came out it's physics engine is serious out dated.

Even the GT Academy time trial they released had a much better physics engine and thats not even playable any more since the servers are down... Reviewers that have played newer builds on GT5 say the physics engine is defiantly better then the GT Academy.

A demo, however small would be nice to get use to the physics.... and even that is wishful think at this point :\

A 31st Dec, or there abouts sounds plausable.

Knowing how long it takes for CD/DVD duplication and distribution from the work I do, it takes 6 weeks (EU distribution), still possible for a xmas release date.
