I could care less about Activision, the developer seems very passionate about the game and the screens and trailer looks great. Plus, all 43 cars, with real stockcar sounds!!! :p

I'll just say please don't get your hopes up too high. It's being developed by Eutechnyx, whose previous games are Ferrari Challenge, and Supercar Challenge, both of which have been sub-par games. Not terrible, but not something you'd play for long. Then again, they are doing NASCAR this time, so that should be a walk in the park! :p

Anyway, back on-topic.

My B-Spec driver is a load of crap! He had a hard time trying to do the Kei Car Championship with my Daihatsu OFC-1, and I easily did that in A-Spec with no modifications at all! I had to upgrade the tyres, lighten it, and boost the power about 20BHP before he could actually win. Then I had to do a similar job in the Toyota Yaris/Vitz race. I'm glad I can hire a second driver now. I wonder if I can get someone actually good?

GT5 has been in development for approximately 2 years previous to Forza which means its using an older graphics engine, so technically Forza is newer than GT5 in that it is 2 years more advanced graphics engine wise.

Nice logic.

Because, of course, they made the GT5 graphics engine three+ years ago and haven't touched it since. That's totally how software development works.

Man driving the X-1 requires you to have crack reflexes to even drive it or something, it's stupidly fast and stupidly twitchy, you gotta get to lvl 30 to get the special event and get atleast all bronze medals.

This is a cool easter egg:

The Die-Cast Underbelly Of Gran Turismo 5

eifelcircuit.jpeg

The underside of a Gran Turismo 5 racer reveals this curiosity: the logo for die-cast collectible maker AutoArt (lower side, center).

AutoArt's made Gran Turismo models before (that actually is the Nismo Skyline GTR, the same car depicted in the screenshot), and GT5 studio Polyphony Digital has plenty of the collectibles on hand.

No one's suggesting they base the entire car on AutoArt die-casts, but it looks like at least a generic undercarriage from one was used here.

Update: Looks like this is an Easter Egg. Reader ShiryuGN supplies this picture of an actual AutoArt undercarriage; it has no logo, like the one above.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had one of those '76 Ferrari's I could use for the Ferrari race and Grand Turismo World Championships. Much appreciated.

They might build on top of it but it cant be more than the sum of its parts, the major tech was created 5 years ago compared to 3 for Forza, so technically the Forza engine is built on newer technology which is why different generations of games look better than the last.

^ WOW just WOW, so what you're saying is Forza developers did in 3 years what PD couldn't do in 5. Because that's what it sounds' like. Also game engine and the game itself isn?t two individual products, they're both build simultaneously. They modify the engine as needed by the game or vice versa.

Both games had technical data on hands from previous games (most of it anyway). You have to take into account that PD had more experience and history with the game. It might be the new elements (kart, NASCAR, course editor etc.,) might?ve throw PD off the course.

If you remember both games were shown for the first time in E3 2009, while Forza was released the same year GT5 had another year to work on the game.

Graphics aren?t the problem with GT5, lack of work done on it is.

They did what PD couldn't do? Really? So says you. This is YOUR OPINION.

What you clearly fail to realize is some people happen to think that GT5 is the better game then Forza, so not sure how your opinion that Forza is the better of the two is all of a sudden some sort of proven fact. When I share I happen to think GT5 is better, I state so as my opinion, because I realize it is just that.

Besides this blatantly obvious fact that you are pushing your opinion as fact, for those of you who keep insisting and arguing over the fact that graphics mean everything, okay, I will go ahead and take the bait. Let's talk graphics. For all of you who keep saying Forza is the better of the two games , I love how you are are all conveniently forgetting the fact GT5 is actually capable of running natively at 1080p, while Forza, as of now not sure about the next version that is coming out, is upscaled to 1080p from 720p. Maybe this page of this tech analysis will shed some light on the subject of GT5's graphics for you. Ao if you really want to argue graphics like they mean everything, realize that if GT5 was only capable of outputting 720p and relying on upscaling for it's 1080p, that objects on the side of the road along with whatever else you feel Forza does better, would probably look just as pretty in GT5 as you believe they look in Forza.

Now the thing is, one could even argue that on the large screens of HDTV's that people play their consoles on, one may not even be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, so it is just fine if Forza is only natively running at 720p, which I actually may even agree with the fact is is hard to tell the difference unless you are on a screen of 50" or larger. But the truth of the matter is PD chose to go ahead and support 1080p natively, so yeah, let's even say GT5 does look worse then Forza graphically, which I absolutely do not agree with whatsoever, but if it does, the fact one is 1080p natively, and one is not, especially when the one that is is supposedly on the weaker console graphic wise of the 2 consoles, well, I would think that says something, but then again I also have no bias to other system, so I tend to approach things with an open mind.

My apologies to all for going so OT, and I am honestly not even sure how Forza keeps popping up in this thread, it really should not, but some people keep insisting on mentioning it.

the thing is that by making gt5 output a sharper image, they have sacrificed how much they can put into that image without killing the frame rate... like you can see the game more clearly, but there are less things to see clearly in the first place...

i'd rather that they work in 720p and everything looks abit less detailed, but at least everything looks right, especially the rain effects, and they can afford to increase the eye candy around the track

but maybe the right way is not to think of it as so much a 'game' as it is a 'driving simulator' .... kinda like flight sims show you just enough graphical detail to let you know what everything is supposed to be, and its the controls and the physics which are the main focus

a nice chunk of hours into the game, here is my quick hit review divided in three secions (a la ars)

Good

  • graphics of premiums cars are unreal
  • love the driving physics
  • sound is great
  • the specials
  • kart racing is awesome
  • best tracks of any other racer IMO
  • online will be awesome (once they fix it...)
  • tires MAKE A HUGE difference, and i love that you can tell when you switch them up (i shaved 7 seconds from a race switching from sport to race...)
  • travel/photo mode
  • attention to details in terms of how the car work
  • this is a car lovers game

Bad

  • you can't change tires on standard cars... really PD? really?
  • used car dealership is annoying (same idea when you tried to buy cars in GT PSP)
  • loading
  • while most of the game looks amazing, some textures, shadows and scenery look like they pulled directly out of the ps2 game
  • menu/UI (i actually don't mind it, but they easily could have simplified things)
  • restrictions... some of them make no sense and when they tell you what they are they DO NOT help you acheive them whatsoever
  • damage (while i am not at a higher level and haven't seen how crazy it can be, i should be able to by now...)

Ugly

  • standard cars (what the **** have you been guys doing for the last six years PD?)
  • the veryron is a standard (sorry, that deserves it's own list item)
  • i can't paint a car the colour i want, selection of rims are garbage, no liveries etc etc (no details)
  • this game has no polish, like none...
  • it doesn't feel finished (but kaz said this himself so i guess i can't blame them...)

8.5/10 from me. though forza may be a better video game, i don't think it's a better simulator.

I think what it boils down to for most people is that the expectations set up by the hype weren't met, and I think I've seen that happen in many Sony releases (not to say no one else does it... Fable?). You're still going to have die hards that love it and haters that don't.

i think that being the first Gran Turismo game after the advent of downloadable content, there could be some hope that new content can be added, like more premium cars etc ... so it is still possible to have the expectations met, even if its abit late in doing so

Well I know I sound like I don't like the game but as a matter of fact it's totally opposite. I don't know why the hell I started babeling about forza, for that sorry to ALL.

Snip

Lets also not forget Forza only puts 8 cars on track whilst GT5 has 16. Graphically in terms of what it's trying to achieve I believe that GT knocks F3 sideways. How F4 changes will be interesting, will they aim for 1080p and 16 cars? Or keep the same where they know they can lock a rock solid 60fps?

I give up with B-Spec, doing the Amateur Euro Hot Hatch race my AI driver in a 690bhp~ Ferrari 458 Italia is struggling to pass 150-200bhp VW Lupos, Peugeot 206s, etc..?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the Buick 62 Special a standard car? If so, I have changed the tires on that.

I think graphically, the premium cars are a bit ahead of the pack considering you can get 16 cars on the track that look really good. I think some of the limitation of the FM3 being at 8 cars and 720p has to do with their physics engine and their 360 calculations per second while driving, and the ability to have 8 different cars on the track with 4000 custom layers (due to the livery) on each car. I think sacrifices were made for each racer to accomplish a some different goals.

I have struggled with events like that, so I have made another driver with different abilities to see if that helps (I haven't tried him yet, but I just made him).

Yes, it is a standard car. You can change the tyres on standard cars. I think the confusion is that you can't change the wheel rims on standard cars.

If online wasnt so glitchy it would be brilliant, just had a few good races on nurburgring, funny seeing all the other cars stall because of false start and you go flying through.

Also makes me laugh how people drive they just hit go and bounce off everything on the way round, i love how you have to feather the throttle and brake if you want to drive effectively, much fun watching someone come up to a corner and seeing the back end step out ever so slightly and they try and correct and go spinning off while you zip down the inside. </smug>
