HawkMan
<<snipped>> So, Kinect Beta people, can you tell me how long the dedicated Kinect power cord is specific to the Xbox 360 S? I don't remember ow long some of the cables are specifically, but Ido remember that the cords are DAMN long. if I remember correctly, there's the regular long cord from kinect to the xbox which ends in the Kinect USB plug. you then have a Y adapter for this for regular Xbox' that you plug into the xbox, and you plug the freakishly long power cord into that again. and yes, it was REALLY long. I need to run it behind my wall into the media room. You can always pick up a USB Extension cable. 10ft for $1.50 @ monoprice. Just ordered some, there damn thick, damn long, and work very well. Stronger then most retail $25+ cables. I love monoprice ha. On topic, Ill be buying kinect during christmas, when we get "employee appreciation" and I get a whopping 35% discount + trade in bonuses ='s kinect for damn cheap. I won't have any problems placing my xbox a long distance away from the TV. Now I just need the damn thing to launch so I can buy one of those brackets to attach to the back of the tv to mount Kinect on top of the tv. without tacky solutions. Hedon
You can always pick up a USB Extension cable. As Hawk says below, the cable isn't a standard USB cable. :( However, Hawk says it's pretty damn long, so I think I will be safe.
HawkMan
The kinect cable is at least 2m, the power cable from the Y connector is more than that again.

That is a little over 6 feet, which might not be enough, so hopefully it's more. Otherwise I have to use the power and standard USB, which would suck ass. +InsaneNutter MVC Posted September 30, 2010 MVC Share Posted September 30, 2010 I managed to get the Dance Central and Joyride betas to work that could be downloaded under Viva Pinata on the marketplace the other week. If you are in the dash preview beta load either of the games up, after the Kinect warning press the guide button as the screen goes black. The beta will then load and not force you to exit because the Kinect sensor is not connected. Of course you can not actually play the games without a Kinect sensor, you can just navigate the main menu's and such. Hey, its the closest I will get to Kinect until its released anyway :p Some pretty un-interesting videos I made of that:

HawkMan
Kinect doesn't get its power through USB, so that's not the issue. As you say though, the special plug is the issue. errr, it does actually, the special plug IS USB, but as I said, it comes with a Y connector for those with old consoles, where you get USB on one part and the power into the other. there's still only one cable going to the kinect unit. and that is a USB cable with a special plug for higher power. Which means it would suffer the same problem as USB power, too long cables causes voltage drops, so you can't use extensions(it's actually a problem with all DC cables, but most provide a good overhead to avoid it. or have higher gauge to limit the issue.) the prioblem with USB is that it provides 5v, and because it's fairly low, most devices require exactly 5 volt as well, causing crap cables or cables above 2 meters to crap on the voltage drop. Use longer USB cable and provide power into the other end?

bob_c_b
This is by no means in defense of Kinect, I think it's cool but I doubt the launch games will be great, but who gives an F what Game Informer says? Let alone one reviewer on his Twtiter feed, if it's a serious issue GI should post it on their site and risk the possible wrath of MS public relations. I have little use for most of the gaming press for that matter, most suck at reviews and are only good for preview pieces. I find forums like this combined with demos far more useful than any of the so called gaming press, but of course that requires me to wait until stuff is released to make most purcahses, or make leaps of faith. Ayepecks
According to GameInformer MS are making it difficult to get software to review He says Sony sent the Move about a month in advance... there's still over a week until the Kinect is a month from release. Seems like a similar time frame to me, but what do I know besides basic math?

George P Global Moderator Posted October 13, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted October 13, 2010 Who cares? MS can send review kits to whoever they want and whenever they want. Game sites aren't somehow special because they're game sites. Even if they get it a week before release they should just be happy they get one at all.
