[Official] Kinect - Over 4 million units sold!

Recommended Posts

I think your jumping the gun a bit here or maybe it's just the way I see it. As with any review for a game/movie/book w/e opinions vary, add to the fact that the target group for kinect doesn't check game review sites anywhere near as much as the people on around here do then his statement holds true. The games or the experience with the device can't be expressed through a review, and I think this is true. Look at the number of people who didn't expect much out of it who then had fun after playing it for a bit in a store or if they were lucky at some MS event etc.

I disagree. I think the notion that Kinect games, and by extension motion control based games, arent subject to review is ridiculous. If a quality game is produced, it will show through in the final product. Reviewers are going to see that. I agree that opinions will vary, but thats just the way reviews are with any type of game. Theyll always be reviews that are contrary to the majority.

A dev could've put god knows how much work into a game yet because it's targetting little kids or the casuals it's visuals and so on probably don't match what the "hardcore" group of reviewers expect in their games so they toss it to the side as shovelware, the bias is clear from the get go anyways.

I think that thats a cop out. There are plenty of games targeting little kids or the casuals that are amazing. Yesterday I got to play the new Kirby game. Was it aimed toward kids? Yes. Was it particularly hard? No. Was it a well made and enjoyable game? Absolutely and most reviewers agree with that.

Would you guys like to see a flashier 1st post in this topic or is "less better", with what we have so far?

They are subject to review, but its been a very slow year for gaming and it is a device people are excited about. I'm sure plenty of people will buy games they normally wouldn't go for...just like happens at console launches.

At any rate, it's not really worth arguing about when we'll see what happens in four days.

Kinect will out-do Wii Launch

Microsoft has a lot riding on Kinect. Naturally, they're being publicly optimistic about how many units they will sell. Companies tend to be like that when they invest $500 million in the marketing.Exactly how optimistic Microsoft is about Kinect sales is pretty staggering.Says Microsoft's interactive entertainment head Aaron Greenberg: "We'll definitely sell more sensors than the Wii sold when it launched or the Xbox 360 sold when it launched."That's a very bold statement considering Wii sales back in 2006 inspired us to stop saying things "sell like hotcakes" and start saying they "sell like Wii." Still, a device that can remove the videogame controller entirely is nothing if not exciting and innovative, so we're not saying Greenberg is crazy.

Oh BTW can anyone comment on whether Kinect video call will be available in Canada

I know it is off the topic so sorry :)

My understanding is that it will be available everywhere. Video Kinect is just another communication form like voice chat. You'll be able to chat with WLM contacts too.

There shouldn't be any limit to it, it's not like the media content based services that have funky licensing holding them back in places. As long as both people have kinect it'll work between 360's, and then it should work between the 360 with kinect and anyone on the PC with WLM as long as they have the hardware.

I am thinking this is running on the Windows Live network and using Windows Live Messenger/Video functionality and bits essentially?

CNBC: Microsoft Kinect in the News

Looks like MS is really getting some news backing now too.

Go to Kinect Launch in NYC an additional 2 free games and 1 year of Xbox Live. First 3000 people in line.

http://majornelson.c...nch-in-nyc.aspx

Kinect Sports and Joyride are the extra 2 free titles.

Considering some here said that Kinect will only sell 10,000 by 12/31/10, that should be no problem for everyone to get in line and get this deal!

That's a good deal, does that make it 3 total games? Since it does come with one, add another 2 free, wow.

Kinect Lag can be Killed
Kinect module for Morphene, from NaturalMotion:

NaturalMotion tech 'simplifies Kinect development', animation specialist reveals new Kinect middleware; studios already on board.

NaturalMotion believes it can make Kinect game development as simple and straightforward as playing games on the upcoming device. The company has revealed to Develop a new Kinect module for its popular animation middleware, Morpheme; one which it says can bring an end to any in-game lag issues. ?Lag times in Kinect are just not a problem with the right filtering algorithms and judicious use of motion input in different situations,? says NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil.

In a new interview with Develop, Reil says the new Morpheme Kinect module can provide animators and programmers the right tools to kill off lag much easier than usual. The Kinect module works by allowing animators and programmers graphically author how Kinect data is used on their in-game characters.
Article continues below:

?The Kinect system runs live alongside our Morpheme runtime engine. The Kinect module in the Morpheme runtime retargets the live motion data onto your character and from there can be treated like any other animation data,? said Reil.

?What?s also cool is that you can prototype Kinect game ideas or controls quickly in Morpheme without having to get a dedicated engine going,? he added.

NaturalMotion, the Oxford based middleware group, has already licensed its motion-control middleware module to ?multiple studios?, and is optimistic about the tech?s future.

?Kinect for Morpheme is very cost effective in terms of the time and money it saves both compared to creating a similar solution in-house, as well as in terms of sheer reduction in iteration time.?

Reil said Microsoft has been positive and ?very supportive? about the new module, which will be available to all developers soon.
?It?s clear that Kinect is crucial to Microsoft?s Xbox strategy, and it?s great to see how it?s supporting the development and tech ecosystem around it.?

Kinect will use only a 'single-digit' percentage of Xbox 360 CPU power

By Vlad Savov posted Nov 3rd 2010 4:48AM

What do you know, someone's been busy working in Microsoft's labs while we've been waiting for the company's Kinect motion control peripheral to launch itself into our living rooms. The highly sophisticated webcam has undergone some algorithmic optimizations and now Alex Kipman, lead software developer for what used to be known as Natal, tells us that its processing overhead for the Xbox 360 console will be no greater than a "single-digit" percentage. That contrasts very nicely with the last number Alex gave us, which indicated there'd be a 10 to 15 percent penalty for using Microsoft's new motion controller, and should mean your petting sessions with Kinectimals will be running smooth as butter when Kinect hits stores tomorrow. Great news, eh?
