jnelsoninjax
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Texas Tech professor is under fire for what reportedly happened during a class this week. Sources tell KCBD NewsChannel 11 that 50-year-old Texas Tech Health Sciences Professor Rod Hicks was instructing students this week from Austin via teleconference. We're told that when the class ended, he left the video feed open. This is when students on the other side of the feed saw hicks surfing for sexual material. In 2008, Hicks was presented the UMC Endowed Chair for patient safety. According to his Texas Tech staff listing, he also specializes in pediatrics. We've learned through an open records request that Hicks was removed Thursday from his professorship of the endowed chair. As of Friday afternoon, federal records do not show criminal charges of any kind but it is our understanding he may face civil and administrative penalties. We're told Texas Tech police are investigating this, but that no crime reports are available at this time. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center released this statement, "This is a personnel matter and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is unable to discuss details at this time." http://www.kcbd.com/....asp?S=12711606
Conjor
So let me get this straight - he was doing a teleconference from some place in Austin. I'm assuming he would have done this from his home and not on university owned property. And now he is getting slapped with punishment for surfing for some skin on his own computer? And before someone says "RTFA", it does not specify if it was from his personal computer or a university computer.
Growled Member Posted June 30, 2010 Member Share Posted June 30, 2010 These are college students for goodness sakes.Surely they can handle a little porn.
Calum Veteran Posted June 30, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 30, 2010 So we shouldn't be able to search for porn in our own homes then? The teacher leaving the video feed on seems like an honest mistake and there is nothing wrong with watching porn at home, if it's a personal computer. I may be assuming stuff here, but the article doesn't state - it just seems this way from the article.

Calum Veteran Posted June 30, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 30, 2010 Let it be their problem. Well, it certainly shouldn't be the teacher's problem - from what it seems, he was searching for porn at home. It's the problem of the people who are complaining (whoever that is). It's the problem of the people who are complaining (whoever that is). If he were using school/government property (for example a school issued notebook) then he'd be at fault. I'm just not sure what the consequence would be if he did or didn't receive enough training operating the software. In my book it's an accident. Shadrack
Just to clarify, this happened in Lubbock, Texas. This area of the county is so vastly religious conservative that it is a dry county! To me Lubbock, Texas represent the belt-buckle of the bible belt. Do all these strapping christian men go home and surf porn when no one is looking? Absolutely! But if they get caught by anyone (even their wives) it is a huge deal that is completely blown out of proportions. I'm talking families going forward in the middle of church congregations and confessing that their daddy looked at porn and needs prayers. Its ridiculous. This doesn't surprise me one bit, given the area.

Raa
I don't think the issue is with him surfing for pr0n in his home (nor should it be if he was) The issue I see here, is that he allowed the pr0n to be displayed to the public. (Allegedly)
Reacon
This is absolutely stupid. You can count on the fact that his professorship is over, at Texas Tech or anywhere else. Years of college down the drain because someone took pr0n the wrong way. His life is now destroyed due to something that at least 80% of people who have access to it, enjoy. Absolutely f***ing stupid.
