kevinmd88
I have an ASUS P5G43T-M Pro motherboard I just got in the mail from Newegg. Everything seems to work except the audio from HDMI. I installed the newest driver available from ASUS's web site. According to device manager (attachment #1), the HDMI audio device is installed... But according to the Playback Devices control panel (attachment #2), it isn't there? I tried several different HDMI cables, no luck. My Xbox 360 has audio through HDMI if I plug it in to the same port on the back of the TV, so the TV isn't the issue. I tried these steps as well in my attempts to get it to work: 1. Reinstall drivers through the Asus exe. No luck. 2. Device manager, right-click the Intel G43/G45 Express Chipset under "Display adapters" and uninstall, also check the "Uninstall device drivers" checkbox or whatever. Same for the HDMI device under "Sound, video and game controllers". No luck. 3. Tried a different HDMI port. No luck. Can anyone help?
Singh400
Going to sound stupid, but make sure the individual devices aren't muted... Also, another tip. Constantly play music in the background. Even if you can't hear it, you should be able to see the "sound meter" move up/down. If it doesn't it means it'll be a different problem. If it does, then all you have to do is keep playing with the settings till it outputs correctly.
kevinmd88
Hi, thanks for the reply. :) I do see the sound meter go up and down when sound is playing, but the problem is it's not the HDMI device because it isn't in the list. :/ Same applies for mute - I can't mute it if it is not there... [EDIT] I caught on that you might have meant the TV for the mute thing too. I've had it on full blast for a while to see if it was just being extremely quiet, but no luck. n_K
I can't imagine it ever working, HDMI on a PC comes direct from the GPU... As you may or may not know, GPU is the Graphics Processing Unit, which is not linked in any way to the SPU (Sound Processing Unit). EDIT: Looking at the pic, it would appear to be linked. First time I've ever seen that, plug in speakers and see if you can get audio out of them? But I'd be suprised if the HDMI includes audio
BGM
right click digital output and choose 'set as default' or whatever it says similar.. on my laptop sound over hdmi out works be setting my spdif interface as default playback device.. :) I can't imagine it ever working, HDMI on a PC comes direct from the GPU... kevinmd88
Hi nK, thank you for your reply as well. I've seen several computers that have both video and audio through the HDMI port. Some graphics cards/motherboards have SPDIF connections for this purpose, but most of the motherboards I've seen that have onboard HDMI include audio as well. It's useful for HTPCs, which is the purpose of this computer. My last laptop also had this feature to select HDMI audio drivers when you installed the NVIDIA gfx drivers... though I never used the port on it. I tried plugging in speakers through the 3.5mm jacks in the back, and I got sound out of them. I also double-checked to make sure the TV speakers were working - I tried component and both HDMI sources with my 360 and all had audio. I just noticed that my motherboard has a digital audio connection right above the HDMI outlet... And taking a second peek at the playback devices I see that both the audio sources that it thinks are "plugged in" are digital sources... Could it be possible that the HDMI audio source is being overridden because it thinks there's an optical audio connection in place?
BGM
have you tried setting our optical out sound device to default ?
n_K
I know audio is in HDMI, but the HDMI ports I've seen are on GPUs, and to get audio into that they'd need audio in ports (none I have seen have them) or to decode the HDMI, and re-encode it with audio (which would need the port on the M/B)... Humm weird.
Singh400
Have you installed the latest drivers from the manufacturers website?
kevinmd88
I did try setting both the optical sources to default, but neither one sends audio to the TV through HDMI. This seems logical to me because I'm not using the optical connector on my motherboard - all I have connected is the HDMI cable. [EDIT] To the last poster: that was the first thing I did when I encountered this problem :) [/EDIT]
kevinmd88
I just installed the drivers from Intel's actual web site for the G45/G43 chipset, and presto, HDMI audio is back again, and my TV is magically detected in the playback devices list. I guess there is something wrong with the ASUS drivers... But anyway I thought I'd post this solution in case anyone has this problem too.
