ok, I know I'll get flack for this... but I don't get this game? So... you gather materials and then you build stuff out of blocks? Is that it?

In essence, yes. It's about being creative, various blocks have different properties, and there are also plants, animals, objects (mine tracks, torches, weapons, armor, ladders, bookshelves, etc), which you can use to make a world that you envision. Also, through the use of redstone (a dust that applies a 1 or 0 state to it's subject) people have made things like computers, automated cart systems, and tons more. Not to mention it's only in alpha so much more will end up being added. The game is probably not for everyone, but for people who loved Legos and the such it's a dream come true.

I loved lego, I'm addicted to civilization 5 at the minute but minecraft game actually looks daunting. I mean, building things in 1st person mode looks especially hard.

It's not bad at all, it's a very mountainous world sometimes and you can easily use that to survey your work, and the FoV allows you to good a good grasp on what's happening. It takes a little getting used to (memorizing a few recipes, even though most of them are built like how they look, a pick is 2 sticks on top of each other with 3 verticle stones). Other that that it's simple, left click to break/attack, right click to place.

First watch this:

Then this:

You gather resources to build stuff, and discover new areas... And at night, the monsters come out to get you...

Actually, I find the exploration more rewarding. Survival mode is awesome. Discovering new stuff. Trying to find iron, and even diamond... Building stronger tools to progress faster... Suddenly breaking into a huge, dark cave where monsters are waiting for you... The anticipation as you move into the darkness... The adrenaline rush as a monster jumps you, and you have to either defend yourself or run for your life.

Double post, but here's a HUGE list of facts that Notch has said is coming to the game, and what he wants to add.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49256

Reading it makes me so damn excited for what this game will end up being down the road.

this should be merged with the other (far bigger) minecraft topic and needs to have the [official] tag added

https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/933554-minecraft/

because this game is awesome and deserves an official topic :)

Minecraft's servers were apparently DDoS attacked by 4Chan f****wits because 'They want more updates'.. showing their true ignorance not knowing what the **** alpha means and not realizing that Notch was a 1 man team and that the Halloween update is coming soon..

Stupid ****ing 4chan.

They should realize Notch could just shut the game down and say 'you'll play it when it's finished.'

That really ****es me off, the man is trying to start a company, get an office, hire some employees, etc. and they felt it necessary to bring down his website? Notch has been amazing with Minecraft thus far, they need to cut him a break.

They've got several reasons for the DDOS and their actions:

1) Notch is technically unemployed. He makes all his money from Minecraft. If you are unemployed, you should be able to code for a few hours a day. Hell, normal people manage to work for 8 hours a day and 5 days a week.

2) In the beginning, he was pushing out updates weekly and his blog was very active. Now, he rarely updates his blog and a new version hasn't been out in forever. If you have as much free time as Notch has, you could be working on the game more. Setting up an office, hiring employees, etc is just an excuse. That stuff doesn't require a full time job's worth of work for several months.

3) He keeps pushing back updates.

IMO, given the circumstances. He deserves it. He's just riding the popularity while bringing in some serious cash. He knows all the fanboy white knights will defend him and he's really not obligated to do anything because as stated on his website, the game is alpha and could be dropped on a whim.

Wow, what utterly rubbish reasons. He's setting up a company - that's not easy. He's also hugely in demand for interviews. In any case, neither you nor anyone else gets to define his work day.

Besides, nothing justifies a DDOS attack, ever.

http://notch.tumblr.com/ is hardly neglected. I would never expect daily updates from a developer. His http://twitter.com/notch isn't quiet either.

1) He likely does code for a few hours a day if not more. Have you seen how much he is adding with the Halloween update? An entire new area, a portalling system to travel between the two, new monsters, new lighting systems (torches burn out, lamps added that last forever), fish, a watch (to keep track of day/night cycles while underground), changes to the spawning system (light makes less of an effect on spawns the farther down you go), Biomes, etc. You obviously have never written a game or anything like it if you have no idea how long it would take a sole developer to do that. Honestly, that entire list is probably hundreds of hours of coding as most of it has to not only be implemented from scratch, but bug tested and optimized as well.

Think about it this way, it generally takes a team of ~100 developers 2+ years to make a game from scratch (engine and all), Notch is doing just that BY HIMSELF. Hell, even games which already have a solid engine still take 6+ months minimum for large teams to complete. Considering Minecraft Alpha released in June, only four months ago, I would say Notch is making impressive progress.

2) Have you ever started a company? Didn't think so. It takes a lot more work than you think. It honestly takes at least a month of gathering information and pushing the proper paperwork through the proper channels before you ever start the company if you want to do things right. Beyond that he then has to find office space, employees, etc. You may say its just an excuse, but lets see you start your own company while making a game from scratch.

3) People shouldn't expect updates at a regular time, he is not pushing back updates, he is pushing out updates when he gets them finished.

To say he deserves it is just idiocy, I bet you wouldn't be able to manage half the stuff he does in a day with programming a game and starting a business. It takes a lot more than you think and it's obviously something you never tried to do on your own. Before judging what you expect from an individual, try judging how much of his time is actually taken up by what he is doing.

EDIT: Not to mention, you seem to think it has been months since Minecraft was updated.....what? Sept. 18th was the last major Minecraft update. That is 1 month and 4 days ago. How is that "months" worth of time that he spent not updating the game?
