Rappy Veteran Posted September 8, 2010 Veteran Share Posted September 8, 2010 Fabio Capello has confirmed that he will step down as England manager after the 2012 European Championships. The Italian officially took charge of the Three Lions in January 2008, on an agreement originally scheduled to run for two-and-half years. Initial success, which saw England canter through their 2010 World Cup qualification campaign, saw his stock rise and he was handed a contract extension ahead of this summer's showpiece in South Africa. However, having flopped badly in that tournament, many felt the Football Association were wrong to hand him fresh terms before such an important event. Capello has started to repair the damage done at the World Cup by making a bright start to Euro 2012 qualification, but the jury remains out for many. The 64-year-old is not going anywhere any time soon, though, as he fully intends to see out his contract. England look well set to qualify for the European Championships in two years time and Capello will be at the helm. He has, however, made it clear that whatever happens in Poland and Ukraine, he will then relinquish the role and relieve himself of the pressures which accompany one of the toughest jobs in world football. "Absolutely. Yes," he said when asked whether he would be leaving after Euro 2012, repeating the assertion to make sure everyone understood. "We have to qualify first of course but after that I will be too old. "I want to enjoy my life as a pensioner." Dark_ph0enix
Maybe now they'll be able to get O'Neill. I doubt Stuart Pearce is gonna be able to "step up" - though didn't the FA state the next manager would be English? If so there aren't a great deal of talented managers who immediately spring to mind. (though to be fair - 'tis late ;) ) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936440-fabio-capello-to-quit-in-2012/#findComment-593127084 Share on other sites
