Propheta Messias
It's a prorated contract for the 2010-11 season. From my understanding, that contract is up at the end of the season whether he plays or not. I don't think they can just hold off and apply the salary to another year. I'd like to know the official ruling on that. Ouldnt he just sit out the season and become a UFA, with no waiver restrictions? I know they have the option to suspend him. Propheta Messias
The Isles have the option of appealing to the league to "toll" his contract. Essentially applying his contract to next season instead of this season. Then they would be able to let him sit the year and trade him next year. Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 9, 2011 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2011 The Leafs sent defenceman Francois Beauchemin back to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Joffrey Lupul, prospect defenceman Jake Gardiner and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2013. Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 10, 2011 Veteran Share Posted February 10, 2011 Burke just stole his first rounder back from Anahiem. That's a bit ambiguous because both Lupul and Gardiner were 1st round picks. The real prize is Gardiner since Lupul is a decent but overpaid winger. I'm expect this to be regarded as a trade win for Toronto although that will depend on Lupul's health and Gardiner's development. Lupul is a bit expensive ($4.25 million cap hit for two more seasons), so the Leafs are taking a bit of a risk of their own in this deal. However, Gardiner is the prize catch. A solid all-around defensive prospect, he could turn pro in 2011-12. For now, Beauchemin's minutes will be missed. The Leafs could recall Keith Aulie to replace him, which is a positive move for the future but a step back now. Because Gardiner was added, this was a good move for Toronto. http://www.forecaster.ca/thestar.com/hockey/tradelog-viewtrade.cgi?trade&x_id=1961 Also, it isn't a case of "could" recall. They will recall Keith Aulie at 12:01 on Thursday. While Aulie is only 21, the Leafs are quite happy with his 6'5" frame.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 17, 2011 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2011 Lupul seems to be awesome for Phil Kessel. After going for dogs years without a goal, he has three goals since Lupul arrived and I believe that Lupul has assisted on all three of them. The first two were PP markers but tonights first goal was at even strength.
