cisco VPN client cannot connect to VPN gateway

Recommended Posts

I use cisco vpn client ver 4.6 in win XP and try to connect to VPN gateway that have public IP.

My computer is connected by direct cable to a router .And this router is connected

to internet by PPPoE .

I use Cisco VPN client ver 4.6 and try to connect VPN gateway .

But It is failure. The error is 412.

But if the same computer connect to internet by PPPoE directly and the VPN client

can connect the same VPN gateway without problem .

Why do I cannot connect VPN gateway when there is router .

How can I fix it ???

Please advice .

You shouldn't have to forward ports for the client to work only the server end will need the ports open.

Well he says it doesn't work if the router is plugged in. But works without the router.

That sounds like a port forwarding issue to me. Either that or uPnP or NAT is/are disabled lol.

^ exactly can you post the model numbers of the devices between your pc and the internet, possible double nat.

Also for cisco ipsec client to work your going need vpn passthrough enabled on the router, and a double nat could cause you problems.

Also 4.6 is really old client btw, should still work - but curious why have not updated the client?

I do believe 5.0.7.0410 is the lastest version of the ipsec client.

edit: Just looked and 4.8 was available in jan 2007, so 4.6 is Really OLD..

I would suggest using shrewsoft VPN client for Cisco IPSEC. It is much faster to connect and establish a tunnel, and you can configure split DNS and WINS client side. The only reason I wouldn't recommend it is if your company won't allow an open source client.

Back on topic though, if it connects to the VPN without your router, it's definitely your router's fault. Either the router is blocking it (no passthrough, double nat, firewall, etc), or it's giving you an IP from the same IP block that the VPN server is giving you. I've seen that happen a few times at my job where people have the same subnet as the VPN network and can't connect.
