Need new Android smartphone

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

I'm looking to get a new android phone. I'm currently looking to get a Nexus One but am wondering if there is anything better out there. I have also looked at the HTC Desire. I don't want an external keyboard and don't mind a large screen. I also looked at the HTC Desire HD but its not available in AT&T 3G bands.

The only thing about the Nexus one I'm unsure about is that it's a relatively old phone now. Is it still worth buying?

Needs:

- 3.7"+ Screen

- AT&T 3G bands (850/1900)

- Good battery life (Lots of texts, internet, and some talking)

- Stock Android 2.2 preferred

Thanks for the help!

How important are graphics to you? Games and so on....

The actual CPU part of most high end phones is the same ARM v7, but Nexus has worse graphics. If graphis is not needed, then I would go with Nexus, as it should get the updates faster, considering it is stock experience without carrier crap on it.

On a side note Samsung has great screens :)

The graphics aren't that important to me. I currently have an iPhone3G and will play Angry Birds to kill the time. I usually browse the web a lot more.

I have looked at the Captivate but there's something about it I don't like. Not sure if i can place a finger on it... It might be the UI. :|

I got to use my friends T-Mobile G2 today which is similar to the HTC Desire Z. I thought i wouldn't like an external keyboard but after using the G2 I'm not sure anymore. All the external keyboard phones i have used before this were very bulky but the G2 wasn't too bad. :) If anyone has a G2/Desire Z could you tell me about the battery life?

I'm looking forward to the Nexus S but it seems like it'll be for T-Mobile.

Well, the phone UI can be customized in almost every way without having to flash a custom ROM. Many people change the Launcher UI to ADW, Launcher Pro, or Zeam. On my Epic 4G, the stock Android launcher is also included, so the Captivate might also have it. For MMS, Handcent and ChompSMS are popular alternatives. There are some excellent music player and video player apps on the Market.

Unfortunately the desire HD suffers from the same dust problem as the original desire. Took me 4 handsets before i got one with minimal dust and even then from what im reading that over time dust can still creep in with these handsets. Dont get me wrong I love the phone to bits its awesome and makes a refreshing change from iphone and wp7 but yeah htc need to sort their s**t out with the manufacturing process and sealing the screens

I know i can change the UI but i think it's only part of the problem. I'm not sure i like the overall feel of the phone. I might have to go and take another look. The Desire Z has been driving me crazy all day. I keep wondering if I could live with an external keyboard phone... :| I want a large screen phone so that it has enough space for the keyboard but if i have an external keyboard I don't have to worry about the screen space... right?

EVO 4G is a great phone.

If i could get a Evo4G i would have gotten it by now. I'm on AT&T and don't wanna switch to Sprint to get it.

Nexus one: Great phone, but aging and most likely will be hard to find new. Google doesn't sell them anymore, so you're stuck with eBay.

Captivate: Probably the best Android device on AT&T (rest are pretty bad lol). Not to mention it has one hell of an awesome screen and is the most powerful android device so far.

Nexus S: Looks to be one hell of a phone, but you're going to have to wait for it to be released.

The Captivate is nice. A new phone is coming out:

It's called the Samsung Elite. It is THINNER than the iPhone 4, features a mix-metallic frame, and is probably coming to multiple carriers!

Problem is that phone won't be out until Feb of next year at the earliest, and with those specs I don't see it coming out till Summer

The Samsung Galaxy series are sweet phones. I have the Vibrant (from Bell here in Canada), and it's a pretty sweet phone.

Though, I did break the screen by dropping it like 3 feet in the air which sucks ... I guess gorilla glass isn't THAT strong.

I thought HTC had a version of the EVO on GSM for AT&T? A same model with a different name?

I'm looking for an Android device too... even if I felt in love with WP7' UX (but lacks openness)...

Anyway I was looking at the Desire HD... but can't help looking a bit forward to the NEXUS S or, for that matter, any phone coming around january 2011...

The problem is that I need the phone before december 10th...

Any guess about the nexus s' release date?
