spudtrooper
yeah, saw them tweeting about it being on bones tonight. they're plugging it on a lot of shows :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593370036 Share on other sites

BoyBoppins
I hope it was natural and not some shameless plug like Microsoft has done in the past. In other news my GF was watching "90210" (apparently its still a show) and the computers are Windows branded from the back. WP7 and Bing got plugged on Hawaii 5-0 I guess also. (apparently its still a show also) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593370102 Share on other sites
____
I hope it was natural and not some shameless plug like Microsoft has done in the past. Yeah it's a bit awkward when they inject "binged it" into the script. Mr. Gibs
I found it very forced but i guess thats just me :/ What product placements in shows aren't "forced"? If a company sponsors a show, expect to see their products. Simple. Ayepecks
It wasn't really that forced, IMO. No more so than any other Bones product placement, or the majority of product placement I see on television. It was somewhat awkward if you already know about the product, but if you didn't know about it I doubt it'd seem that way. (I'm having a hard time explaining it, hah.) (I'm having a hard time explaining it, hah.) i know exactly what you're saying.. I see tons of "notebooks" with the apple logo on it but when you see the "app" that is running its far from anything Mac related at all and in most cases looks like a dummy pc you see on display at Ikea vs anything real but to the laymen they see a logo and make that association.. us nerds laugh it off (and sometimes cringe) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593370154 Share on other sites
George P Global Moderator Posted November 12, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted November 12, 2010 This type of product placement is often more effective than a full on ad which most of the time people tend to ignore or get up to go get something etc till the show starts again. But if you plug it IN the show, then everyone, or most people will notice. I see the windows branded PCs used on the mentalist as well, Windows Logo on the monitors etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593370358 Share on other sites
Calum Veteran Posted November 14, 2010 Veteran Share Posted November 14, 2010 I don't see anything wrong with intentional product placement. Companies need to promote their products as much as possible in order to gain more sales. Southern Patriot
I noticed the WP7 as well. I also noticed that on Criminal Minds, Penelope gave the whole team (other than Dr. Reid, who insists on using paper) iPads a few weeks ago. All of the CSI shows used to make significant use of iMacs a few years ago, but those have mostly been replaced by Dells and other Windows machines over the last couple of years. Subject Delta
Almost everything in Casino Royale felt like a shameless Sony plug, and for me it was one of the many things that killed the character of the movie. I am not a huge fan of advertising in movies and TV shows, there are enough commercials to do that. I am not a huge fan of advertising in movies and TV shows, there are enough commercials to do that. I respect your opinion, but honestly cannot fathom how it could ruin the character of the movie, if it doesn't interfere with the plot? Sony's product placement didn't interfere with the plot at all - the film would have been exactly the same, just with unbranded technology. I'm leaning more towards the idea that product placement in films and TV programmes actually allows them to feel more realistic because people in real life use those brands, not unbranded technology. neo158
im hearing wp7 isn't selling very well atm. i guess they need all the adverts they can get. Only in the US. WP7 seems to be selling nicely in the UK, but then the iPhone hasn't got the entire market over here that's why Microsoft decided to release WP7 in the EU first. I'll be getting an HTC HD7 in a couple of weeks, I tried one out last week and was very impressed. carmatic
in a way its good for the show since its using real-life equipment rather than some generic unbranded and possibly unconvincing piece of tech... but as long as they dont turn it into some kind of gadget porn, things like having someone call you and the camera shows the person's name on the phone is ok, but making the screenplay so that you can get the phone from as many angles as possible is just not right... Ghil
Product placement is nothing new, and fine by me as long as it's not an overboard thing like in Heroes with the cars. o_0 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593380448 Share on other sites
Quillz
There are some shows that feature brands extensively even if the company didn't pay for placement. I believe "The Office," for example, regularly features products like the iPod just because it's what you'd most likely be using in reality, not because Apple paid them to show it off. Lazure
Heh, I remember on NCIS:LA where they actually stopped and took the time to show the characters using Aero snap with Windows 7 to make comparisons on suspect information. Dragging each window to the side very slowly just like they do on the commercials. It was the only time they did it too, every other time they show Eric using the giant multitouch screens. I really really hate that kind of product placement. I don't mind so much when the characters use say a Dell branded computer but don't turn the whole thing in an ad Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/952712-wp7-on-bones/#findComment-593382124 Share on other sites
George P Global Moderator Posted November 15, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted November 15, 2010 It doesn't bother me much either, infact it works better than adds imo. People are giving their full attention to the show/movies so when you show something like this they'll all notice it. When it's a normal ad you don't know if they're doing something else, or if they're even in the room at that time. Southern Patriot
I think one thing that has caused this in recent years is the prevalance of DVRs with "commercial skip" functions. Kind of hard to skip the commercial when it is integral to the show!
