+Warwagon MVC Posted December 14, 2010 MVC Share Posted December 14, 2010 Bleh, I give up on waiting. I've been watching the tracking for the only package coming to my zip all day, but it's STILL out for delivery, almost 12 hours after it originally left UPS this morning. About 2 years ago UPS was so late they finally arrived at 9pm.
Tanshin
Really shouldn't be that hard, especially if you have another computer with SATA handy. I'm thinking it would be something like this: 1. take out the battery and flip the developer switch 2. take the SSD out and connect it to a machine that has a DVD drive in it 3. use that machine to install Windows 7 on the SSD 4. before the first boot into Windows, take the SSD out of the install machine and put it back into the CR-48 5. boot into Windows 7 and set up any hardware that needs drivers not included with Windows (most of the hardware is similar to what is in the current model of Dell mini 10, the 1012). Couldn't you use a flash drive or something? Or would you not be able to boot from it?
aznkid25
Don't see any coming to my zip code. I applied a week ago on Tuesday when registration opened. I applied using the other form on Saturday. Should I still be hopeful?
Southern Patriot
About 2 years ago UPS was so late they finally arrived at 9pm. UPS always starts running late about this time of year, it's pretty normal for them. Lousy weather combined with an increase in packages due to Christmas makes for long days for those drivers. I live about a mile from the local UPS center, and some evenings I don't think they get done until 10PM this time of year. The road the center is on is horrible too, so I feel sorry for the drivers. Southern Patriot
Couldn't you use a flash drive or something? Or would you not be able to boot from it? You could probably do that too, but since I haven't seen the boot sequence on one myself, and no one has said anything about the BIOS settings on it, I'm assuming it won't boot from USB. AJerman
Yeah, I'd assume the biggest issue would be the boot process of the machine. We see it has a near instant boot for it's supported OS, but what does that mean for anything else that may be attempted to be installed on it. Does it have a BIOS that Windows can support? According to what I just read here, it is an EFI without BIOS support: https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices/cr-48-chrome-notebook-developer-information/how-to-boot-ubuntu-on-a-cr-48 (scroll down to the bottom and read the last paragraph or two). Hell, given that, it would probably be easier to Hackintosh it than to get Windows on it!

Hell, given that, it would probably be easier to Hackintosh it than to get Windows on it! Perhaps! I was reading a little of the developer notes just now and it sounds like it would be a bit of a task to get Windows running on it, but maybe not impossible. Once it's figured out it could probably be scripted for easy install by anyone. Hopefully this package that's still out for delivery will come to me and I can mess around with it and see what I can find. I'd honestly just asssume have Ubuntu on it though, and there are already instructions for that.

None listed as shipped yesterday or today.

xendrome
Some guy here - http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=4e0b08938ccca279&hl=en - posted the following The Cr-48 have been delayed due to the snow storm in the mid-east of the country. Google Did send them out but the carriers (ie UPS and FedEx) couldn't move them because the airport was closed and they don't have authorization to change it go Ground shipping and even if they did they still couldn't do anything because the roadways were closed as well. They are just starting to get airports and the roadways open again and so I think thrusday friday is when we will see some Cr-48's come out to people. He's not official, and he's not google. But it would be nice to see someone from Louisville, KY chime in on the weather and what they think.. The thing is, none of the packages I have seen show a EXCEPTION for weather, so I am calling BS. I'm calling BS on that as well. The snowstorm is nowhere near Louisville, KY, and it certainly wasn't there yesterday. And UPS ALWAYS puts up a notice on their site when things are delayed due to weather, yet there has been no such notice. edit: check out the reply I just posted there ;-)
Tanshin
Actually... it may be true. Take a look here: http://www.wave3.com/ It's a local news station and there's Winter Storm Warnings up. More stuff: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/ And, looking through the weather reports from the past few days, there was indeed some snowfall. For a New Englander it's nothing to be afraid of, but for out there it may be surprising. Take a look here: http://www.wave3.com/ It's a local news station and there's Winter Storm Warnings up. More stuff: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/ There are a handful of closings in the area, but UPS is not among them : http://www.wave3.com/link/341318/closings-cancellations And looking at the Weather Channel's info for the area shows only partly cloudy today and tomorrow, with a possibility of snow Thursday, but going back to being clear after that http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/USKY1096 . There has to be a LOT more than 4" of snow to close down UPS's hub.

Tanshin
/me grumbles at how long post edits take sometimes While there was indeed snow, the values are far from shocking from a CT point of view. For them, maybe. Either way, unless there was severe icing (which could have happened yesterday because the temperatures were below freezing), I see no reason for airports to close. Exactly, Louisville International didn't close... That is UPS's HUB for the US, if that Airport was shut down you'd be hearing about it all over the news and on UPS's site via an official announcement. For them, maybe. Hell, 2" or so of snow in the last couple of days wouldn't even be all that shocking here in Mississippi, much less Kentucky. any brave mod want to split this thread in two? one for actual laptop discussion and one for am i gonna get one discussion? i'm far more intersted in the actual hardware/software than reading about everyone that is hoping they get one. Have you bothered to look at the two sticky threads in this section?
