Steven P. Administrators Posted December 21, 2010 Administrators Share Posted December 21, 2010 From today on the updated forums, members will be able to rep posts in the technical areas of the forum. It works like this, a member posts a request for help and when someone posts the correct response, any member and the topic starter can vote the best answer by adding reputation. The post with the highest number of votes turns green so it's easily noticeable as the "best answer", like so: The result is that eventually, the members with the most reputation are also the most helpful. This will make MVC candidate voting also a much easier process ;) Currently the system is enabled in all sections of the Help & Discussion Center. That category will be moved up and I'll be adding the system to other tech areas of the forums, as well as setting the number of votes per day allowed to hand out per group. firey 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/962454-rep-system-enabled-with-a-difference/ Share on other sites

+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted December 21, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted December 21, 2010 Excellent idea. This should encourage more members to post helpful responses. That being said, shouldn't the reputation points from earlier this year be erased, thus making sure everybody has the same basis to build his/her reputation on? firey
It requires a bit of modification to the url.. but you can technically "Rep" any post in any forum.. may aswell just enable it for all.. Like, I just "Upranked" Neobonds post, even though there is no + button. Ji@nBing
Why not just enable it for all and for all posts instead of only one per thread? It makes no sense. Like, I just "Upranked" Neobonds post, even though there is no + button. Same here - I was just able to "uprank" a post someone made about jailbreaking the Kindle3, over in my thread in the Members Review section. Edit -> I was able to take that rating "off" Neobond, and give it to firey instead. Definitely looks like something that could be problematic / prone to abuse. firey
yea, I don't know how to get the "Rating" to be more than 1... however if it is possible.. there is the chance that could in theory make a bot of some sort to just pile on the ratings. Thanks for the Green - Feel I oughta return the favour ;) Like you said - at the moment, it's more fun than anything, but can you imagine in one of the more "explosive" threads, say one of the politics threads? Get a group of people all to vote for the same post? Could definitely be abused. (if you notice in the url) theres the: &secure_key parameter, Im thinking it's unique to each user.. and that's what prevents multiple rep gains, however.. each time someone is upranked.. they do get rep (I am at 3 rep) So yea, along with the "Fun Part" two people could just sit an uprank each other back and forth to get a tonne of reputation.. thus throwing off votes, and all that.. Steven P. Administrators Posted December 21, 2010 Author Administrators Share Posted December 21, 2010 Yeah this is the reason it was disabled last time.. People abuse it. Aye - I noticed the increase in my own Rep when I went into my profile. I think you can only vote once per thread - I tried to re-vote for the post of yours I'd already re-upped, but though it went through, it didn't seem to change it. Like you said - I wonder what's (at the moment) to stop people just voting for each other. leakAddict
If you put together a system of max reps per user per day, and let the mods make sure that it isn't being abused, I don't see why it can't be used everywhere... What if I created a thread, for example, saying Operating System A is better than Operating System B. Then, if every user can dish out 5 Reps per day, managed to get 10 people to up rep the original post? Granted, with a forum this big there are enough people to balance it out. But, it could work out the other way - say if someone goes though my Kindle thread, for example, and down reps everyone, because theyr'e a Nook user? Sounds stupid, but I can see it happening. treemonster
although this seems to be a good idea for the help sections, i've already noticed people trying to get rep by adding absolutely any advice to threads in the hardware section. you'd think more posts would be good, but not when they are wrong or harmful. i also seem to be the only one repping posts in the hardware hangout as of right now. looks like people want to get repped but don't want to rep others. as it is there have been only two posts in a single thread i've found to be helpful enough to up rep. the first reply in that thread was totally wrong and if the Op had acted on it he would have had two somewhat expensive videos card which would refuse to work with each other in the way he was asking about and that post said they would. Then I would say that use of the report button may be necessary. Also, the mods would be able to detect such activity (I'm guessing?) and make sure to warn or ban the offender. I'm thinking something like 5 to 10 reps per 24 hours, and you need to rep 10 to 15 different people before you can rep the same person again. firey
I think yea, if it is done right, it can be really benneficial, however there are lots of areas for it to be abused, and I wouldn't be surprised if it does. jbrooksuk
I quite like the idea! What happens when there are two or more posts with the same rep? Are they classed as equal thus no definitive useful post?
