Rep System enabled with a difference

I like the idea of the rep being support forums only. The problem with the +1 rep button everywhere is that people will give rep points to posts that state opinions that they agree with, and not necessarily useful posts. For instance "Apple Sucks!", "I hate Republicans", "I think PS3>>>XBox 360" etc.

The only reason we had said to do it everywhere, was because technically you can rep any post ya want (just like how I have the green post in this thread), so not having a "+" button won't stop people from giving rep because the can sorta thing.

well it will be really obvious when people abuse the system by repping posts outside of the help section. people who bypass the lack of a button can get a pm not to do it again and then a warn if they continue.

and if that doesn't work then just take it out completely. as it is people who are suddenly posting in the tech sections are just going to give up and stop as they don't get repped by anyone for their posts.

This is an interesting concept that's much less prone to abuse, good idea. (Y)

As far as a reputation system in general is concerend though, it would be nice in the main boards again. Sometimes people just write some seriously epic posts, and reputation acts to the effect of '+1'.

Are members allowed to ask other members for Rep points if they resolve their question (maybe the OP does not realise that there is a Rep system in place), or would this be considered rude or against the rules?

Also I noticed that Rep points are not enabled for the first post in a thread? What if a member posts a "How to" type thread rather than posing a question.

I have noticed that in many threads already the first or 2nd response gets marked as the best, then a definite better answer comes along and no one reps it.

As much as I would like this "feature" to help I just don't think it's going to. If anything, it looks like it's going to hurt people coming n later searching for an answer to a problem because their eye will just go to the green post and look no further.

I don't think a "best answer" should be allowed to be selected until after a certain amount of time, maybe 12 hours or even a day.

And what if no one +rep's a post in the thread, even though it is the correct answer and/or a helpful post?

There should be a way for staff to manually turn the Rep system off for every thread made.

Take for example: the Mac vs PC threads. Reps there don't make any sense.

yep the personal attacks being up repped last night in that thread i don't think were the intent of this system.

IPB admin tools will catch you out. Two accounts logging in from the same IP? Instantaban!

Hopefully (I thought it was clear from my initial post - I'm not saying I'd do it, but I'd be willing to bet someone does it) - as has been mentioned, some 'interesting' posts recently have been getting 'repped'.

What if you have a sibling that has a neowin account? What if you login at school and someone with the same external IP is also logged in?

It is being abused a bit, but i find it beneficial as a whole.

Can the number of rep's be counted and displayed next to the thread star rating - i find the thread star ratings useless and abused.

It's definately being abused already. I've noted over a dozen post already that have had no beneficial point yet have 3+ reps on them.

No, i'm not going to go reporting each one, that's a bit far.

Shut the system down and leave it that way. Sorry.
