Do say "vanilla" or "vanella"?

Recommended Posts

The recent post about Vanilla Pepsi inspired me to post this topic. My friend and I have argued about the proper pronunciation of the word "vanilla" countless times. He insists the word is pronounced "vanella", with the "i" sounding like an "e". I however, choose to pronounce it "vanilla", keeping the "i" sounding like an "i".

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary says the word is pronounced like I pronounce it - "vanilla". However, I'd like to take a quick poll and see how people pronounce the word. And if you do, in fact, pronounce it "vanella", please explain to me why because I sure as hell don't see why it would be pronounced that way.
