MSN Premium v. AOL 9.0 Optimized

Question

So, it's been an exciting year with MSN and AOL. Both are slated for the releases of there new clients in October. I wanted to get this thread going, cause I do this pretty much every year. I wanted to battle off AOL and MSN this year in a 'calmer' way...usually these threads turn into "I hate AOL threads," but that's not what I want to see. I want to see actual feature debates and stuff like that. Don't argue, be nice, keep it On-topic. I am also going to see if I can post some screen shots of MSN in here at a later time.

On that note, let us begin. :D

While surely AOL will continue to have superior content, MSN is making a decent push in the areas you outlined as AOL having the advantage.

-MSN has the new MSN Radio Plus, and will be introducing a new music video site.

-MSNBC.com is being revamped, and will contain a lot more streaming video for subscribers to MSN.

-MSN is working on gathering all of the above content, and adding exclusive content from partners (anyone that isn't associated with AOLTW?) from movies, tv shows, and what not into a new broadband video "portal" codenamed "Primetime". The design for this portal is reportedly pretty interesting and unique. A take on what video on the web should be.

(related: MSNBC.com hired a new "Streaming Media Evangelist" today...or announced rather. They'll be stepping up the amount of video bigtime.)

If MSN executes well on all of the above, plasticparadox, would you say that MSN moved ahead of AOL?

MSN Radio Plus? That's not actually included in my MSN subscription. Just to check, I visited the URL with my MSN browser. It's a no-go.

MSNBC's video content maxes out at 100 kbps. Unless we're going to get some better quality video, I'm sticking with CBSNews.com.

I'm interested in the MSN Primetime you're speaking of, however. I'll check that out.

But for now, I stick with my statement. AOL's content is superior.

Yes MSN Premium does look cool and exciting.

However being in Australia, there are more negatives than there are positives for this service, which is new Australia.

I have used the website http://ninemsn.com.au almost everyday for the past few years. I believe the content on the website is high quality, unique and good in general.

However most of the services and information which I usually get off the website for free will soon be locked to MSN Premium subscribers only.

I think this is pretty unfair because all of the advertisements, banners and spyware cookies that are on the website should be more than enough to pay for the sites hosting and support fees.

What makes this service even more difficault to believe is that MSN Premium in Australia is not a ISP service (it does not provide a connection to the Internet). Purchasing a MSN Premium account only lets you access locked content and adds some additional KB to the capacity of a hotmail account.

I think this service is a rip off and is unfair to persons like me. Why should I pay $140 per year just to check my Horiscope ????

My bad, I wasn't clear with what I was saying. I wasn't talking about what is available *today*. My premise was, when MSN added/changed the features I mentioned above, would you then think that MSN moved ahead of AOL?

The 'v9' effort for MSN is still being rolled out across the network afterall, we're not done just yet.

Indeed, you and about 5.6M other Aussies enjoy NineMSN everyday. The version of MSN Premium that you have there operating now in Australia is akin to MSN 8 here in the U.S. As a BYOA product, meaning a service that runs on top of your ISP, or rather in addition to it, the service isn't as compelling. The next version will improve on that.

I suppose it comes down to whether or not you feel you want to be more productive with your time on NineMSN, and if so, is $140/yr is worth that increased productivity or not. If all you use NineMSN is to check your Horriscope, then by all means, don't subscribe. If all you need is extra storage space, MSN Extra Storage will do the trick.

Cheers, mate. I hoped you could tell I wasn't trying to make light of your situation! Honestly, I can see where you're coming from. MSN (and many other previously free services) are going pay. Remember, maybe 3 years ago, when everything was 100% free? Good example, MyPlay. They offered 3 gigs of free MP3 storage. Remember that? Also, MSN Photos, uhhh... XDrive, GeoCities FTP access. Everything is changing. Even horoscopes :alien: .

Sorry, don't know what else to tell you, except it's not only you.

AOH*ll or the Microsh*t network. Never will I use either one. That is like using IE instead of Mozilla. How do all you IE users like them popups that I never see???? Both are bloated packages. Learm how to customize your own web page to show what you want.

:ninja:

i don't have popups with MSN :D and with IE, i use custom security settings that prevent anything that's not in my "trusted sites" zone from scripting... no popups :D :p

don't take this as an anti-mozilla post, it's not. i'm just defending IE.

IMO, everytime we have a thread like this, you always ruin it...and come in here and say AOL OWNS ALL THIS...and that. Not anyone does that but you. We are trying to have a simple valid discussion, and you ruin it all the time. It's not fair to the users that want a fair and balanced debate, so please stop.

Well it must be AOL confusing the news, cause the news still doesn't know what's on AOL's mind...They've confused them as to when the hell it's releasing...

So let's try to keep this non-bitching thread on topic...Thanks Toxikk
