In a recent interview with Impress PC Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi revealed plans to install Linux on the Playstation 3's detachable 2.5" hard disk drive. The announcement of support for the open source operating system is part of Sony's desire to alter the perception of the Playstation as merely a gaming device and transform it into that of a fully functional computer.
Kutaragi did not reveal whether or not the PS3 will ship with the disk drive or if customers will have to purchase it as an add-on accessory. The availability and capacities of these drives is also unknown.
