AGP 8X -- or AGP 3.0 as Intel calls -- it is about to become a very important feature and you will be amazed how many racks of cards with this interface you'll have to fight your way through this autumn when wading through your local computer store. AGP 8X, or even AGP 3.0. Sexy labels aren't they? Won't the marchitecture guys just love foisting those on a semi techno-savvy public?
At the time of introduction, AGP 4X offered a performance increase of two to three per cent over its predecessor. And still, most games don't need the 1024 Mb of bandwidth that you can get with AGP 4X so why would you need the 2048Mb you can get with AGP 8X? You can be sure that its not about the games, since nowdays the GPU talks straight to memory. The T&L graphic processor does most of the stuff on the graphic board itself. So why AGP8X? One possible use for the excess bandwidth that we have been offered here at Computex, and one we actually like, is that you could make use of multiple video streams -- these would eat up all the bandwidth you can offer.
