Alexa gains new voice control skills for traffic updates, weather alerts and more

Amazon's Alexa has received a new set of skills that will help you stay up-to-date with traffic conditions and other information necessary when you're planning to go out. Amazon announced this new capability along with other skills for its digital assistant.

You can now ask Alexa to help make your trip more convenient by requesting updates about your commute, traffic situations or directions to a place you're planning to go. For example, you can say "Alexa, how is the traffic to the airport". You can also have that information sent to your phone through Alexa-powered devices by saying "Alexa, send that to my phone". Once a notification shows up on your device, tap on it and your preferred mapping app will launch with the route guidance.

In addition, you can ask Alexa to send you notifications about severe weather conditions by saying "Alexa, tell me when there’s a severe weather alert", for example. It's a proactive alert that comes when a local weather warning is up.

Alexa's new skills will also let you ask for video highlights from NBA games to be played on any Alexa-enabled device with a screen. Finally, you can keep tabs with the 2020 U.S. presidential election by saying "Alexa, what’s my election update" or “Alexa, what happened in the last debate”. The digital assistant will then share relevant details with you such as poll-related information, candidate positions, and debate recaps.
