In an episode that feels like a re-enactment of the company's Super Bowl ad, Alexa fell silent for a few hours today as users reported outages across the United States, and even some from other parts of the world.
Voice commands and queries to the digital assistant seemingly fell on deaf ears as Alexa was unable to carry out her usual range of duties in Echo-owning households. The problem wasn't universal, however, and did not affect everyone.
The outages have been linked to issues with AWS US East-1 servers, and other services relying on AWS have also reported problems. Amazon was able to rectify its server woes earlier in the day and this seems to have fixed Alexa as well, who has now returned to her usual, chipper self.
As Cortana struggles to find her footing as a digital assistant without a mobile platform to call her own, Amazon has been having a great degree of success with the Echo line of products in peddling its own Siri alternative, which may even overshadow the Microsoft brainchild on Windows itself.
