Amazon's app for Windows phones, aptly named Amazon App, is set to be discontinued today; however, back when we first reported that the company was planning on killing the app, we noted that it appeared that the Amazon app for Windows PCs was to survive the Windows app exodus.
Today, it seems that we are learning a bit more as to why that is. According to Windows Central, the company is working on a UWP app; however, it will only be available for Windows 10 PCs. Moreover, it will be a Hosted Web App, also known as Project Westminster.
Hosted Web Apps are an interesting part of the Universal Windows Platform. The app itself is essentially the website wrapped in an app, but being a UWA, Amazon will have the ability to add other features, such as Live Tiles, Cortana voice commands, and more. Of course, with that in mind, it's not clear at all why the company would have to devote anything more than the most trivial of resources to adapting the app to phones.
Last month, it was rumored that Amazon would release a new app for Windows phones after WinBeta confirmed it with the company's customer service. It would appear that that is no longer the case; indeed, customer service is not often the most accurate place to find information about upcoming products and services, especially when the company itself hasn't yet announced them.
