Amazon will be holding a press conference next week and it's likely that the web-based retailer will be using the occasion to officially announce some kind of new hardware product such as its highly rumored tablet PC or some kind of new Kindle eReader. News.com reports that the press event will take place on Wednesday, September 28. No other info on the event was given by Amazon but News.com says that the PR rep who sent them the note has previously sent out invites to other press events that centered around Amazon's Kindle eReader.
Amazon has hinted strongly that it has been developing a tablet PC device for months. Earlier this month TechCrunch wrote a preview of what it said was the Amazon tablet. It claimed that it was powered by Google's Android operating system and would cost a mere $250. It also claimed that instead of the normal Android user interface, Amazon has created its own UI for the tablet. It was also designed to link up to Amazon's many online services such as its Cloud Player, its Instant Video player, the Android Appstore and of course its Kindle eBook service.
It's also possible that the press event on Wednesday could introduce a new version of the E-Ink based Kindle eReader. Amazon has reportedly been losing market share to Barnes and Noble in the eReader business thanks to the sales success of the book seller's Nook Color device, which happens to be an Android-based product. It's also possible that Amazon could launch both products at this same press event.
