AMD cuts prices on processors

CHIP FIRM AMD cut prices on a number of its microprocessors over the weekend, with its highest desktop CPU, the 3200+ costing $464. We predicted this would happen on the 6th of July, as you can read here. The Athlon XPs, at their cheapest, cost $66 for a 2000+ chip.

But its "desktop replacement" mobile CPUs are rather good value. For example, the 2800+M costs $185, with AMD taking advantage of the boom in the "value" end of the market. Intel has no price cuts scheduled for some months yet, as we sit waiting for the 3.40GHz Prescott to emerge. Will Intel make further price cuts as a reaction to AMD's move? We suspect not, but just as soon as we find out you'll be the first to know.
