Rovio knows a good thing when it sees one. After the massive sales success of the original Angry Birds Star Wars in 2012, the game developer is going back to make a full fledged sequel, Angry Birds Star Wars II, which will be released on September 19th.
Rovio's press release, along with a new trailer shown above, confirms that the sequel will feature characters and settings from the Star Wars prequel movie trilogy. Over 30 characters will be playable in the game and the trailer suggests that for the first time in an Angry Birds game you can choose to pick either the "good" Angry Birds or the "dark side" pigs. Rovio added, "At this point we will not comment on rumors or speculation that Jar Jar Binks will be in the game."
The game will also support TELEPODS, a new collectable series of figures from Hasbro. Rovio says, "Placing these figures onto your phone or tablet camera will scan your character of choice directly into the game, allowing you to select new characters on the fly."
Today's announcement states that Angry Birds Star Wars II will launch "across app stores worldwide" which would seem to suggest that iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 versions will all be released on the same date, as was the case for the original Angry Birds Star Wars. Rovio also announced that fans of the original Angry Birds Star Wars game will soon be able to download new levels based on Return of the Jedi.
