There might be a battle between factions in the hacker group known as Anonymous. The Financial Times reports today that a web site, AnonOps.net, that has been used by members of the group to help organize cyber attacks against others, has itself been hacked. The web site hacks include posting the login names of over 500 people who allegedly have participated in Anonymous activities.
Hacker experts are quoted in the article as saying this kind of move is evidence that Anonymous is now under siege as factions fight for leadership control of the group. This happens just as Sony has blamed the group for the cyber attacks on its Playstation Network and Sony Online Entertainment three weeks ago. Sony has said it found a file with the name Anonymous and the words "We Are Legion" on one of the servers used by Sony Online. Officially Anonymous has repeatedly denied that it had anything to do with the cyber attacks although some feel that members of the group were still involved. Anonymous has admitted involvement in the "denial of service" attacks that briefly suspended Sony's Playstation Network several weeks ago.
Last week rumors hit the internet that a new attack on Sony's gaming servers was in the works for last weekend. However it appears that the news leak got Sony's attention and caused them to take additional measures to prevent the new cyber attack from taking place. Meanwhile Sony is still trying to restore at least some services on the Playstation Network but there is still no official word on exactly when that will happen.
